Just Around the Corner - June

Pastor’s Pen

Since its founding in November of 2016, the work of Memphis Coalition for Action and Hope (MICAH) has been slow and intentional. The organizers and founding members, including Shady Grove, have been intentionally gathering each month, often with a spotlight on a current issue of justice that is impacting Memphis and each time with an opportunity to have a conversation with someone you might otherwise never get a chance to meet. I say the work has been slow in that these meetings have occurred for 19 months in a row with little deviation from the course. Slow and intentional. Come June 24th, the intentional will remain, but we are leaving slow behind.

On June 24th (3:00p at Lindenwood Christian Church), MICAH will hold our Issues Convention where all charter members will gather to decide the 3 issues of injustice upon which we will focus our organized power. June 24th is what the past many months have been focused on, and at the Issues Convention, we get to decide the course of the next many years. Up until now, we have been a blank canvas, and now we create the first brush strokes.

As a founding partner, Shady Grove has a voice at the table - 40 voices in fact - so long as we show up. Each partner has one vote per person in attendance up to 40 votes. This means if a small congregation has 40 members who all show up, they all get a vote. Additionally, if a congregation has 1,500 members and 200 attend, they get the same 40 votes. Regardless of size, each charter partner is essential to the power base of MICAH, and we want to hear from them all!

So we will convene and we will caucus. We will hear from issue champions who have a deep seated passion for an injustice they want to see addressed. We will celebrate how far we have come as a unified group and we will vote on which path we will, together, follow. Then we are off and running.

Immediately, 3 task forces will be formed; one for each of the issues selected. More meetings will be scheduled, the issues will begin to be broken down into attainable goals, experts on the issues will be determined and sought out, and public figures will be named who will be essential to our success.

June 24 and the months to follow are where the rubber meets the road for MICAH and our fight for justice in Memphis. It will be exciting work with many successes, and it will be tiring work with sure failures. We were slow and intentional to start because we didn’t want this group to be a ‘flash in the pan’ season of activism that crumbles at the first setback. With so many months of foundational work, One on One conversations, and dedicated trainings, we are now set to be a sustained and sustainable force and voice for justice in our city.

Hope to see you on June 24th.

Blessings,
Rev. Will
