OC Opera presents Jules Massanet’s Cinderella

Cinderella
News Release - For Immediate Release

BREMERTON – Each spring, Olympic College’s Opera Program pulls out all the stops for its annual production and 2018 is no exception. This year promises to be even more special thanks to the state-of-the-art setting in OC’s new performance space, the William D. Harvey Theater, located in the College Instruction Center at the Bremerton campus.

This year’s production showcases a timeless classic, Jules Massanet’s Cinderella. Opera program director, Susan Trainer, describes the play as romantic, magical, haunting, comical, and very beautiful.

The opera program begins a four-day run with shows as at 7:30 p.m., May 31-June 2; and 3 p.m., June 3. General admissions tickets are $10, or free with current OC ID.

“The stellar cast includes Britt Armstrong, Soprano, as Cinderella, an Olympic College vocal performance major,” she says. “Her Prince Charming is Andrew Etherington, tenor, voice faculty at OC, MM Peabody Conservatory and member of the Seattle Opera Chorus.”

Rounding out the cast are Kimmi Rupp, Coloratura Soprano, BA in Music, California Lutheran University as Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother; Walt Brown, Baritone, as Cinderella’s father, and member of the Seattle Opera Chorus; Christina Sageser, Mezzo Soprano, OC vocal performance student as Cinderella’s cruel and social-climbing stepmother; Stepsister Rachel Steinlicht, Coloratura Soprano, BA in Music, Thomas Edison State University and former OC vocal student; and Stepsister Nicole Florio, Soprano, OC vocal student.

The cast is joined by Trainer, OC Professor of Voice and Director of the Opera Program, BA Music, California State University East Bay; and Stage Director Micah Parker, MM Texas State University, BM Central Washington University, and Associate Degree, Olympic College.   Costume Design is by Janet English, frequent collaborator with the OC Opera Program, MFA in Arts Leadership, Seattle University, and BA in Drama from the University of Washington.

Massenet’s Cinderella was given its premiere performance in May 1899 in Paris. The music is glorious. Cinderella’s melodies are haunting and tender. The Fairy Godmother sings with suppleness and gleaming high notes. The fairies (Fairy Godmother’s entourage) are represented with delicate, magical and dreamlike themes. The Prince is melancholy, ferociously dramatic, and devastatingly romantic. And of course there are light-hearted, comedic strains for the Stepmother and Stepsisters.

Originally in French, the OC Opera Program will perform in English with supertitles.
