Recent Events
Annual General Meeting | Thank you to everyone who attended the 80th Titahi Bay SLSC Annual General Meeting. The 2018/2019 committee was elected and stands as follows:
New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Team Announced | the club wish to congratulate Steve Kent on his selection in the New Zealand Surf Life Saving team (The Black Fins). This will be the fourth World Championship he has attended and, if the team are successful, his fourth victory. They head to Adelaide in November to defend their title - good luck to them!
Capital Coast Pool Interclub | it was great to see a whole lot of green and white taking over the lanes at Coastlands Aquatic Centre recently at the annual local area pool champs. This event is an opportunity for all clubbies to give Pool Rescue events a try in the lead up to regional and national competitions. It was a treat to have New Zealand athlete Steve (pictured above) join us and show us how it's done on the world stage! Thanks to all of the coaches, managers, time keepers and officials who helped out on the day.
Coming Up
Working Bee | there will be a team heading our first working bee for the season giving both up and downstairs a freshen up. Wear your old clothes on Sunday 12 August 2018 and come along if you can spare a couple of hours to help. We'll be there from 9:30am onwards and morning tea will be supplied. If you're keen on gardening Marie would love to see you!
Courses & Training | there are plenty of opportunities for our Junior, Senior and Associate members to upskill their qualifications, whether it be in lifesaving or sport. Read on to find out more about what courses are on the calendar this season.
Lifesaving
IRB Training | chilly IRB crewman and driver trainings have been taking place on Sunday afternoons at 2pm. We've identified this as an area in the club where we are lacking in numbers so if you've ever wanted to step into the world of inflatable rescue boats now is a great chance. We are in the process of putting together structured trainings together to get everyone comfortable in the boats so get in touch if you'd like to partake too.
Lifeguard Training | if you or someone you know would like to join the lifeguarding ranks at Titahi Bay SLSC this season we will be kicking off training at the end of August. Trainings will run twice weekly and cover off all of the components required to gain the Surf Lifeguard Award. We will also be offering the Patrol Support Award (same course minus the swimming). All interested candidates can join our Titahi Bay SLSC 2018/2019 Lifeguard Training group on Facebook or email the Club Captain.
Lifesaving Committee | last year we were fortunate to have a team of hard-working club members who formed the Titahi Bay Lifesaving Committee. If you'd like to get involved with helping out with some operational ground work please let us know - every little bit of help is greatly appreciated!
Junior Surf
Registration | the registration timeline for our Nipper programme is as follows:
Sunday 5 August 2018 -registrations for returning members open.
Monday 27 August 2018 - registrations for returning members close.
Subs | forms and payment details are available on the Join the Club page. Note that there has been an increase in fees this season. New members can email the Junior Surf Coordinators to go on our waiting list.
Communication | if you didn't receive the most recent email from our Junior Surf Coordinators you'll find it as the first Junior Surf Memo on our website. Make sure you like 'Titahi Bay SLSC Nippers' on Facebook for weekly updates about trainings and carnival updates.

Surf Official Level 1 Course - Wednesday 8 & 15 August 2018 (Maranui, 6pm).
Intro to Surf Coaching Course - Saturday 22 September 2018 (Otaki, 9am).
Surf Official Level 1 Course - Sunday 28 October 2018 (Paekakariki,10am).
Surf Officials Briefing - Sunday 28 October 2018 (Paekakariki, 3pm).
Intro to Surf Coaching Course - Saturday 24 November 2018 (Worser Bay, 9am).
SLSNZ Surf Official Policy | this will now be enforced at all local Capital Coast events. This is a ratio of 1 qualified Surf Official to every 10 athletes.
2018/2019 Craft Squad | there's been an exciting increase in Junior competitors in the craft arena and planning is well underway to ensure the season is managed and structured training is in place. Initially this will be planned around Lifeguard Award training which is our priority leading up to competitions. Those that wish to receive updates need to sign up to the new juniors Facebook page and send an e-mail to Dean with your contact details.
Craft Squad Head Coach | the craft squad coordinators are on the hunt for a suitable candidate to step into the role of Head Coach of the craft squad. Get in touch with Dean if you know of someone or are keen yourself.
In the Spotlight
This month we are stoked to introduce Dean Winter as our newBoard and Ski Coordinator on the committee. Dean came into the club as a Nipper parent when his family transferred from Maranui SLSC but has been in the SLS movement for a long time...read on to find out more about Dean!
Day Job:
I tend to move between Government Agencies every few years implementing compliance and regulatory systems, basically creating oversight of bad guys that like to rip off the system. More recently for Crown Law, and now for the Tertiary Education Commission. Dream Job:
Retired, near a beach, with a big boat. Favourite NZ beach:
Difficult.....so many, I love the Mount, and I love Titahi Bay, obviously for different reasons, the Mount is just awesome, and yet so many cool memories with the kids being created at Titahi Bay, but I think New Chums in Coromandel takes the prize. Best thing about summer:
Long days, surf season, catching up with all the families at the club. What got you started is SLS, how many years have you been involved:
I grew up in Otaki, right on the beach. I started as a nipper there in....a long time ago. I was a member at Foxton for some years, racing IRB's, spent a short time at Worser Bay (until I realised why there was no 'surf' in the name), then went to Maranui for a number of years, mainly in boats, was club captain there for some time as well. Surf Lifesaving highlight:
I have two highlights - mid nineties medal at Nationals for open men’s boat rescue (Maranui), we were beaten by Titahi Bay....cheats, all of ‘em. It was tough back then, dry rough sawn plywood for seats, we strapped planks from old pallets together for oars, so easy now..... Second highlight is seeing my kids get involved and competing, so proud, and it provides me the opportunity to stay involved in a sport I love, seeing it from a different perspective and meeting all the other parents is great. Having been involved in a few clubs I can honestly say the atmosphere and families involved at the bay really are the best. Something people might not know about you:
I’ve done some interesting and rewarding jobs, I spent many years as a detective and was involved in many serious crime investigations including murder and other nasty stuff. I was also a Police diver as part of the national dive squad, traveling all over the country recovering people sounds horrible, but was actually very rewarding bringing people home to families and whanau. Looking forward to this season:
Catching up with the families, really miss everyone over the off season. I'm also looking forward to seeing all the under 16's come through from Oceans last year, a big step so excited to be involved.
In General
Subs | the process for the payment of Nipper and Pipi subscriptions has been explained (see the Junior Surf section above). Junior (U19), Senior, Senior Lifeguard and Associate payments will be invoiced to members in the coming months. Keep an eye on your inbox and advise the Club Secretary if your email address has changed recently. Alternatively get in touch with the Club Captain to discuss payment.
Merchandise | our outstanding selection of club merch will be available again this season. Merchandise Day dates will be advertised via Facebook and future club newsletters. More information can be found on the Uniform page on our website.
