MLS announces FC Cincinnati as newest major league soccer team, 5/29/18

West End SPEAKS to West End ACTS

On Tuesday, May 29th the official announcement from MLS was shared. FC Cincinnati has now become a major league soccer team. This development process has been trying for our community to say the least.  Here are some important facts and dates to remember:

  • March 20th, West End Community Council (WECC) met and voted NO to FCC in the West End and YES to being involved in a CBA (Community Benefits Agreement) process if this development shows up in the West End.
  • March 20th, West End Community Council had a sign up for a CBA Ad-hoc committee to be included in any CBA discussions if FCC comes to the neighborhood.
  • March 21st, CPS board voted Yes for FCC, but must be with a CBA agreement and getting their full fair share of taxes paid.
  • April 6th, Councilman Mann & Sittenfield had a press conference presenting a win-win list created through their offices.
  • April 13th, WECC president signed a CBA from Councilman Pastors' office with majority approval from WECC Exec Board.
  • April 16th, City Council voted Yes to approve an MOU with FCC pending a CBA with the West End community.
  • WECC CBA Ad-hoc committee met at least four times to identify and discuss community priorities over a 2 month period (March 20th - May 15th)
  • May 1st, a story was released to the media that FCC is discussing a partnership with an out of state developer to bring a separate music venue (near the proposed FCC stadium) to the West End.
  • May 12th, David Mann hosts a WE Stakeholders meeting. This meeting was the first time all West End stakeholders were at the same table. FCC and some council members were in attendance also.
  • May 15th, WECC selects a six member team to negotiate on the communities behalf.
  • May 16th, After 9 hours of negotiating, the WECC Negotiating team signs a CBA.
  • May 29th, MLS announces FCC as newest major league team.
The CBA benefits from FCC include:
- WECC is a signer to the agreement
- $100,000 for a housing study
- $50,000 for a "communications consultant"
- "support" the Port's efforts to invest in equitable housing development in the West End
- help raise funds for housing support in the neighborhood
- at least $100,000 each year for Community Programs
- at least $100,000 each year for the West End Youth Soccer Program
- host two jobs fairs in the West End
- provide West End residents with "priority for emplyeement opportunities"
- full-time employees at least $15 per hour
- provide community organizations with "priority for volunteer opportunities"

Now with the up and coming construction of the new Stargel stadium and the FC stadium, we as a community need to stay involved more than ever. There will be many meetings taking place in regards to design details, community engagement, business/ job opportunities and more. We want West End residents to be at the front of the line for resources. In addition, we need to work together to hold FCC, the City and the Port Authority accountable to the details of the CBA and any community concerns that arise. We look forward to growing this partnership with our newest neighbors.

With development comes questions, concerns and the opportunity for you to be more active with the events happening in your neighborhood.

DIFFERENCE MAKER

Meet Coach Larry Collins
By day, Coach Larry is a Researcher at Procter and Gamble. He grew up in the West End and is a current resident. He has been coaching baseball in the community for 4 years now and loves giving back to his community. He continues to do it because he loves working with the kids and seeing them learn a sport he played through college.

Coach Larry also wanted to acknowledge, Coach William Patton, a West End resident that has been coaching 13 years for both the baseball and football teams. Coach Chris Griffin, West End resident that has been coaching for over 8 years with the baseball and football teams and Coach Shanel Gentry who serves as a Treasurer.

To get you up to speed, all the West End teams from last year made the championship games, with one team winning the championship! This Saturday, June 2nd there is a showdown at the Bank St field @ 1pm between two undefeated teams, West End Reds vs LYC of Covington, Ky. Come out and cheer on our team!
