Big 12 Meetings
+ Baylor officials anticipate hearing more feedback concerning the school's 2016-17 Big 12 payment, which has yet to be fully allotted. AD Rhoades called it an "ongoing process" during yesterday's conference meetings, adding that he doesn't believe anything will be finalized this week. Conference officials chose to hold 25% of Baylor's $34.8M payout for the year in escrow, where it would remain until the 105 recommendations set forth in the Pepper Hamilton report were implemented, meaning the school has yet to collect $8.7M. Rhoades: "I think we have finalized most, if not all. We’ve just hired a new director of Title IX, and I think just we’ll just give that a little bit of time. We’re in a good space." (link)
+ Commish Bowlsby mentions the league's media rights could get renewed before 2024-25 if the deal is right, says conversations have already started & there's a multitude of suitors, traditional & not, in the mix. (link)
+ On the topic of sports gambling, Baylor's Rhoades says he's not a fan & Commish Bowlsby runs through the challenges associated with different states in the league footprint having different governing laws. Bowlsby on the potential for sports gambling to push TV ratings higher, "It's a really good question, and I know that our colleagues in the professional ranks believe that that's the case. It's somewhat like some of the fantasy leagues. It keeps people interested that they may not have been interested otherwise." (link)
+ TCU boss Donati on the possibility of Baseball HC Schlossnagle bolting for Mississippi State, "I'll just generally say that whatever comes from it, we're in a position of strength and we'll be OK." (link)
SEC Meetings:
+ Sports gambling. Commish Sankey: "I’ve not seen any restrictions from some states on restricting college sports gambling. We need to prepare and have conversations about ground level issues. [...] We have been in dialogue about manners around gambling over time. ...We are in a new dynamic. Certainly the concept of having a communication relationship or advisory opportunity for someone who better understands the realities than we is on my mind." Georgia AD McGarity: "If some schools are really struggling to generate revenue, they may look at that as a revenue source." (link)
+ The Athletic's Ubben: "Florida AD Scott Stricklin says he expects the SEC’s proposal to expand its serious misconduct policy to incoming freshmen will pass on Friday." (link)
+ Florida boss Stricklin on continually escalating FB AC pay, "I think it’s one of the biggest challenges we have in college athletics, is what our coaches are making. They are in a market that allows them to enjoy those kinds of salaries, but I do think the optics of it are not helpful. [...] I’m appreciative of the coaches we have and the job that they do, but the optics of that are really uncomfortable." Commish Sankey: "There is an end, but where it is and what the cause might be I’m not going to jump into that prediction." (link)
+ Alabama AD Byrne indicates leadership in Tuscaloosa is leaning toward a renovation to Coleman Coliseum, not building new, but sounds like there's still some debate around the options. (link)
+ The Athletic's Emerson: "Just so you know, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said there's not much interest among coaches or anyone else in going to a 20-game (MBB) conference schedule. It'll stay at 18." (link)
+ Texas A&M AD Woodward on the rivalry with Texas, "At some point and time we will pick up our rivalry. It's important to our state and important to our fan base. I'm assuming when it's appropriate and ready, we'll play. It's an opportunity for us to do that. We'd like to do that, it's just matching up schedules." (link)
Kentucky MBB HC Calipari is in favor of the 72-team NCAA Tourney field proposal only if the additional spots go to mid- or low-major programs. (link)
The Missouri Valley extended its deal with CBS & CBS Sports Network, via a sublicense with ESPN, for coverage of its MBB tips through 2023-24. CBS will continue to be home of the post-season tournament final with CBS Sports Network handling eight regular season match-ups & the tourney semifinals. Commish Elgin: "The 2017-18 basketball season was an extraordinary one for the Missouri Valley Conference, and this extension is a continuation of the respect shown by CBS Sports for our league." (link)
LEAD1 Prez and CEO McMillen discusses the Ploetz v. NCAA case, which focuses on the risks of concussions and is scheduled to go to federal court on June 11. The case concerns the 2015 passing of former Texas FB student-athlete Ploetz, who claimed the NCAA should have done more to prevent the head injuries he suffered. There are two reasons this case differs from those that have been brought against the NFL, according to McMillen, who points out that this marks the first FB-related CTE case that will go to trial; meanwhile, there is no collective bargaining agreement between student-athletes and the NCAA like that which exists between the NFL and NFLPA. In addition, the court has ordered unlimited discovery going back to 1950 in all sports to determine whether the NCAA should have known about head trauma. McMillen: "A victory by Ploetz could provide a roadmap for other college football players to sue in the future, and this could shape the future of college football and potentially change the game." Nevada has announced it will switch apparel providers from Nike to Adidas, signing a seven-year deal with the latter that will run through 2024-25. AD Knuth yesterday cited three shared values between Nevada and Adidas as factors in making the switch: the athlete, value and service. "A big difference with us was service. To be on the same level as Arizona State or Kansas or NC State or any of the other major schools Adidas has, we’re going to be considered at the same level of them. I think the quality of the product is amazing. I’ve been an Adidas fan since I was a kid, and I’ve always believed in their product." Financial details have yet to be officially disclosed, but the Reno Gazette Journal cites a source who says the deal is worth roughly $900K annually, more than double the Wolf Pack's $400K annual agreement with Nike. Knuth added: "There aren’t a lot of Group of 5 schools that get interest and get offers from the three big brands -- Under Armour, Nike and Adidas -- so we were pretty excited to have that level of competition to help drive up what we were asking for." Are ADs and HCs scratching their heads wondering if they can still block trolls on social media? With the federal district court ruling in the Knight First Amendment Inst v. Donald J. Trump, members of The National Social Media Initiative in Athletics, including First Amendment and digital attorney Overing, Ph.D. and nationally recognized expert in digital social media psychology and the Director of USC’s Annenberg Program on Online Communities North, and crisis, litigation and digital communications expert and CEO of SM2 Cecil, discuss the case, how it impacts athletic directors and coaches at public institutions, and offer guidelines on what they can do to protect their social media from trolls, hate and harassment. Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner Meeker has released her highly anticipated Internet trends report, a slideshow covering topics ranging from smartphone behavior in the U.S. to tech competition in China. According to the report, the speed of technological disruption is accelerating. While it took Americans 80 years to adopt the dishwasher, consumer Internet adoption took less than a decade. Meanwhile, tech giants such as Amazon and Google will offer more AI service platforms, congruent with AI's growth in enterprise spending. In addition, as more people are becoming connected, there is less room for Internet usage growth, which increased 7% in 2017, down from 12% the previous year; however, those who are logging on are spending more time online as U.S. adults spent an average of 5.9 hours per day on the Internet, up from 5.6 the previous year. NCAA officials, along with Sun Belt Commish Benson, were in Phoenix yesterday to review the city's MBB Final Four bid for the 2024-26 cycle. (link); Northwestern FB will head back to Wrigley Field for a kick in 2020, this time against Wisconsin. (link); D1Baseball's Rogers reports some of the NCAA Baseball Tournament regional matchups were constrained by travel bans. "California public schools could not go to regionals in Texas, North Carolina and Mississippi. Washington public schools could not go to North Carolina or Mississippi." (link)

The Tennessee Tribune profiles Vanderbilt AD Williams' role in the school's progression toward becoming a minority majority institution, wherein enrollment is comprised of a variety of ethnic and cultural groups with none constituting a majority. Racial and ethnic minority groups currently make up about 45% of Vandy's enrollment, a trend that is growing, and Williams contends that while it is important to recognize the school's historical role in the South, history itself cannot be changed. "You need to judge us based on what we want to do. You can evolve." To that end, Vandy has launched the Center on Sports and Society, which will examine a variety of issues, including race in sports. In addition, the school will begin offering courses focused on historic American cities, such as Williams' hometown of Detroit, as part of what Williams calls "intentionality" to progress. Details have emerged concerning Washington's recent parting of ways with track HC Metcalf, as the UW's student newspaper, The Daily, reports that the day before Metcalf and UW went their separate ways, a group of student-athletes approached the athletic department with a list of grievances against Metcalf, including physical and verbal harassment. According to former student-athletes, Metcalf would encourage them to lose weight to unhealthy levels, leading to deterioration and breakdowns. One former student-athlete, who transferred from UW to Gonzaga, described an exchange with Metcalf: " For me, I’m 6’3” and I’m 150 pounds and I’ve been like that all of college. My body fat is 2.1%. If I was running poorly during a workout he’d come up to me and be like ‘...how’re you doing?’ and touch my belly and feel my belly to see if there was any fat there." Full story. (link)
Cal WBB HC Gottlieb earlier this week wrote a series of tweets indicating that an employee from Southwest Airlines asked her to "prove" that her son, who is biracial, was in fact hers before boarding a flight to Oakland. According to Gottlieb, the employee asked for proof because she and her son have a different surname, but "my guess is because he has a different skin color." She added: "I felt that in this situation it was my responsibility to say, 'Hey, this isn’t OK.' We had a passport that verified our son’s age and identity, and both parents were present. But still being pushed further to 'prove' that he was my son felt disrespectful and motivated by more than just concern for his well-being." Southwest has apologized and said it is not required to match the surnames of a child and guardian on domestic flights. Gottlieb then noted that she hopes "the coverage this has received can serve as a learning opportunity and that all families -- regardless of how 'traditional' they may or may not look -- are treated with dignity and respect." Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner wonders if the exit of USC Prez Nikias will have any bearing on the longterm leadership status of Pac-12 Commish Scott, "The development feels significant in that Nikias was one of the last remaining presidents from the group that approved commissioner Larry Scott’s plan to retain 100 percent ownership in the Pac-12 Networks — the business model that has helped define the conference for six years." Wilner also runs the numbers, finds there's been 22 Prez/Chancellor changes since Scott came on board in July of 2009 versus 22 new MBB HCs, 28 new ADs & 32 FB HC changes. (link); Wilner also long profiles new Pac-12 Networks SVP / Head of Distribution & Partner Marketing Budill, who slid over from the Oprah Winfrey Network. Budill points to the attraction of live content, her Pac-12 roots, though she says "not so fast" on a DirecTV deal. Sounds like more streaming deals are coming, plus, "The ‘Pac-12 is challenged’ narrative — I understand why it exists, but I don’t see that from where I sit. I see lots of opportunity." (link)
UC Santa Barbara has named Baglas permanent deputy AD for development after serving a year in the position on an interim basis. AD McCutcheon: "Christina has been our interim director for a year and we are extremely happy that she emerged as the successful candidate from a strong field for the permanent position. Christina has given great leadership to our advancement program and I am confident that will continue." Baglas has been a member of the UCSB athletic department since 2007 and previously worked in the athletic departments at Harvard and Connecticut. (link)
AthleticDirectorU with a new Experts' Roundtable as a group of leading video content creators from Ohio State, Baylor, UCF & Alabama provide insights on their jobs, impact & what the future looks like for the niche that continues to grow in importance. Ohio State Director of New & Creative Media Swartz: "As a leader, I aim to make sure that everyone on my staff knows what our guidelines are but also try to allow for as much creative freedom as possible within those standards." Alabama Director of Video Production George: "Most of us look for a leader who leads by example, is flexible, and holds people to a high standard. Sometimes all you have to do is tell a student what to do and they do it, sometimes students need to know WHY they are supposed to do something a certain way. So flexibility in your leadership style can go a long way." More. (link)
Part II of TV20's conversation with Florida AD Stricklin as the UF boss continues to believe Gators FB is going to be fun again, "We take what we do seriously, but don't take ourselves too serious. [...] The games are pretty important, but it's about more than just the games." Stricklin, who is now a College Football Playoff committee member, takes a pass on if the high-profile event will expand, says the committee's job is simply to chose the best teams. (link)
Today in Fulmer.ticker... "Sometimes I feel like I did in 1993, when I took over (as head football coach). It’s a great challenge. I get a second chance to finish well and I want to do that for me and my family, but also for my university. I’m invigorated by this opportunity, and I love the people I’m working with. I inherited a lot of really good people. Now it’s just getting everyone on the same page and getting the culture right. ... We're taking care of business." (link); Fulmer continues to wear multiple hats, especially when it comes to sharing his FB HC experience with current Tennessee FB HC Pruitt: "We agreed on the front end, there’s no eggshells, he can say anything he needs to me — and he has. It would be silly not to use some of my experience. If I see something on the practice field I’ll make a note and we’ll talk about it eventually, and he’ll do the same thing for me." (link); The Neyland Stadium renovations continue to be "on track," but no timetable set for their start. Also, FB season tickets are pacing "slightly behind" sales a year ago, despite 1,900 new season ticket orders, and the extension for WBB HC Warlick is still "coming soon." (link)
The Daily Press' Teel caught up with Old Dominion leaders to discuss Conference USA's new MBB scheduling twist as Monarchs MBB HC Jones likes the change, "because just doing the same old thing obviously wasn’t working." More Jones, "...because the (RPI) divide was so big between the top and the bottom … that just kept weighing teams down. This addresses that divide between the top and the bottom. It’s a creative, aggressive, forward-thinking way to help the league, particularly the teams at the top." ODU AD Selig says the idea had been "slow-baking" with league leaders, so there was no dissent to implement. Selig also notes added travel costs associated with the move, "(But) I’m encouraged. I wouldn’t be surprised to see other conferences take a run at this kind of scheduling." (link)
Fresno State's cut of beer sales from six home football games this past year was $90K with another $20K coming from baseball and softball games. Interim AD Robertello: "We haven't dived in specifically on what we can do there, but we're hoping to do a couple of things to speed up distribution. I'm not sure if we necessarily provide more places, but the hope is that we can ease the efficiency of the distribution and get more people in and out. Obviously, you do it the right way, but if there's an opportunity to explore a better fan experience and more revenue we need to look at it." Further, the Bulldogs didn't see any uptick in "alcohol-related incidents." (link)
It's Personnel: New Nebraska FB HC Frost's seven-year, $35M deal includes the Cornhuskers paying UCF a $3M buyout, plus bonus opportunities that include $150K for reaching a bowl game, $300K for winning the Big Ten, $250K for a New Year's Six bowl match-up, $300K for CFP access, $350K for playing in the National Championship game & $650K for winning it all. No indication if the sums are cumulative. (link); Houston MBB HC Sampson is staying put after strong overtures from the Orlando Magic. (link); The contracts for Auburn MBB ACs Prewett and Pearl (HC Pearl's son) end tomorrow and while AD Greene says, "We'll take care of that," no paperwork has been finalized. (link); ESPN play-by-play man & host Virk gets a multi-year extension. (link)
Also Noticed: The NCAA COI panel found that North Carolina Central did not monitor its certification process when it improperly certified 22 student-athletes across seven sports. Two years of probation, vacation of records and attendance NCAA Regional Rule Seminars are among the punishments. (link); The Big Sky will shift to a 20-game conference schedule for MBB and WBB beginning in the 2018-19 season. (link); Eastern Kentucky claimed its fifth straight all-sports title from the Ohio Valley Conference. (link); Kennesaw State did the same in the ASUN, knocking off three-time defending champ FGCU. (link); Toledo captured the Jacoby Trophy as the top MAC athletic program, while Eastern Michigan won the Reese Trophy on the men's side. (link, link); USF established the Michael J. Radomski Memorial Scholarship Fund, named in memory of the Bulls former SID who passed away this past fall. The scholarship will benefit students working in the athletic department. (link); New Orleans Saints QB and former Purdue standout Brees won an authentic John Wooden jersey at an auction for $264K and will keep it on display it at Purdue's Mackey Arena (link); Could Indiana & Kentucky MBB meet again on the hardwood? Sounds like they've been talking. (link); Hulu is up to 800K subscribers. (link); TV ratings for both the NBA & NHL Playoffs are up. (link); The NCAA, NBA, NFL, MLB & NHL have filed a response to the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association's lawsuit asking for $3.4M in damages tied to stalling sports gambling in the state as "meritless, if not frivolous." (link)
Interesting takeaways from an interview with former Boston U. Men's Hockey HC & new New York Rangers boss Quinn. I really liked this response on his communication strategy, "...on top of what you are saying, how you are saying is equally important. There are different ways to send a message and sometimes you have to be a bit more stern in what you are saying and sometimes you need to be more understanding. Clarity is all a player wants and that has been the basis of my coaching philosophy. The sooner you can be honest with someone and tell them the truth the quicker they can correct the problem or continue to do the things they are doing well. It's equally important for what you are saying and I've always how you are saying it and it's something I try to keep that in mind when coaching somebody." More. (link)
