2018 Volunteer Projects Announced

We are ready to hit the ground with our third year of volunteer projects to support public lands in NE Minnesota!

How will YOU get involved this year? Will you pound a few nails to help build a boardwalk or venture into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to help monitor visitor use? There are so many ways to give back and ensure that our precious public resources are accessible for generations to come. Find your volunteer opportunity below.

We are continually working to create new opportunities for volunteers. There will be more projects planned and announced later this spring and summer. Stay tuned! Don't forget that you can find additional projects from partner organizations working in the Superior National Forest on our website's Get Involved page.

Multi-Day BWCA Wilderness Projects

Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the BWCA Wilderness Act with a volunteer vacation.

7/11 - 7/15: Wilderness Project #1 - Misquah Lake Boardwalk
Canoe trip. Departing from Grand Marais.

8/10 - 8/12: Wilderness Project #2 - Height of Land Portage Boardwalk
Canoe trip. Departing from Grand Marais.

8/31 -  9/4: Wilderness Project #3 - Sioux Hustler Trail Clearing
Canoe trip. Departing from Cook.

The Northwoods Volunteer Connection provides most of the gear volunteers need for these projects. There is a $50 per person ($25 for students) registration fee for participants.

Wilderness Visitor Use Monitoring

In an effort to better understand the use that occurs in the Wilderness, the Forest Service regularly monitors visitor use. This activity helps paint a picture of what the average visitor experiences while travelling in the BWCAW.

This year we have 40 dates and locations where volunteers are needed to help with monitoring. Find out more at the link below!

Adopt-an-

Entry points are the gateways to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Individuals, groups, or businesses can "adopt" these resources and assist in keeping the entry point areas and portages clear of vegetation and litter.
