SPLC victory: College paper's funding restored after being cut to $100 


Student government at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia cut The Blue and Gray Press budget from from $13,765 to just $100 - for office supplies. The student government gave a variety of conflicting reasons for the funding cut. After SPLC senior legal counsel Mike Hiestand made it clear that cutting funding for content reasons would be illegal, the funding was fully restored for the coming school year.

18 national organizations, led by SPLC, demand that Prosper (Texas) High School stop censoring student journalists and reform its publications policy

“We are concerned about at least three incidents of overt censorship, the imposition of a highly restrictive prior review policy, the complete banning of student editorials and the highly unusual decision not to renew the contract of PHS’ nationally recognized journalism adviser, Lori Oglesbee-Petter,” said SPLC Executive Director Hadar Harris. “Each piece of this is troubling. Combined, they seem to signal a serious attempt to quash student journalism and student opinions and reach far beyond reasonable, legitimate educational purposes.”
