OPRAH MADE ME DO IT
Former USC Annenberg Dean and Founder of the Center for Third Space Thinking Dr. Ernest Wilson found himself seated next to Oprah Winfrey at Annenberg’s graduation commencement speaker earlier this month.

Inspired by her rousing speech enriched by stories of moments in her life that shaped her unique vision of the world, Dr. Wilson took a similar approach in a blog post he recently authored.

He recounts how growing up in a Third Space household, his educational career and his varied and contradictory work experiences led him to found the Center for Third Space Thinking.

Learn more about his personal journey and how he became a Third Spacer in the blog post found here.
THIRD SPACE AND SHAPING LEADERS
David Bishop, USC Annenberg Center for Third Space Thinking advisory board member and former president of two, multibillion dollar global media companies – Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and MGM Worldwide Home Entertainment –  spoke to 2,500 entrepreneurs and investors at the Pioneers’18 annual conference in Hofburg, Vienna on May 25.

His presentation, titled “Shaping Future Leaders,” focused on the current state of the marketplace and its volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity.  He highlighted the importance of developing culture and emotional intelligence in leadership based on Third Space principles and how those principles can help companies ride the wave rather than get swept away by it.

David is a recognized authority in developing effective leaders. His passion for building high-performing teams and coaching executives has helped create a cadre of effective leaders in companies like Netflix, United Airlines, Google, IMAX, and Amazon.  David is an instructor and coach for our Third Space workshops.
ADAPT OR DIE
Congratulations to Caryl Smith Gilbert, USC’s men’s and women’s track and field coach.  Caryl was named PAC-12 Women’s Coach of the Year after the women’s team was crowned PAC-12 Champions for the first time in 22 years.

Caryl was also one of the most popular featured speakers at our Boot Camp last October.  Her perspectives on adaptability in coaching both men and women in a variety of vastly different events have great relevance to anyone working to succeed in today’s complex environment.

Her philosophy of “Adapt or Die” is clearly working.  Congratulations again to Caryl and thanks for continuing to bring Third Space Thinking to life.
DEAN WILSON ON EMPATHY
The USC Price School of Public Policy posted Dr. Wilson’s Harvard Business Review article titled, “Empathy is Still Lacking in Leaders Who Need It Most,” on its Executive Master of Leadership blog.  You can read it here.
