Greater Milwaukee Synod Assembly Report
May 31-June 2, 2018
By Pastor Kim

Over three days, more than three hundred lay people, rostered leaders and visitors participated in the 2018 Greater Milwaukee Synod Assembly held at Country Springs Convention Center in Pewaukee. Church of the Resurrection was represented by rostered leaders Deacon Susan Daniels and Pastor Kimberly Jordan. Voting members were Pat Faherty and Dave Groenewold. Dennis Faherty and Matt Stein attended the opening events as Assembly visitors. In addition to serving (as do all rostered leaders) as voting members, Susan served as a musician and Pastor Kim served as a registrar. Pat participated in a presentation about the Diakonia Program. Matt Stein was elected as the male lay voting member to the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly—congratulations!

The Assembly began on Thursday afternoon with two events:
  • A Lutheran Social Services vision session
  • A hearing on the proposed ELCA Social Statement: Women and Justice
The evening’s keynote speaker was Reggie Jackson, head griot of America’s Black Holocaust Museum. His life’s work has been researching and building understanding of the historical causes of segregation. He gave a very interesting and thought provoking presentation entitled “Using a Historical Lens to Build Racial Understanding.” We heard ideas about how we can work together to build a racially just society—as God intends the world to be.

Following Mr. Jackson’s keynote address, the Assembly gathered for worship with Holy Communion. Bishop Paul Erickson preached the message based on the Assembly’s theme: Trusting the Winds of the Spirit.

Friday
  • The opening devotion was given by special guest, Bishop Elias Kitoi Nasari, of our companion synod—the Meru Diocese of Tanzania.
  • The 2019 budget was presented.
  • The ELCA Churchwide report was given by Judith Roberts, ELCA Program Director for Racial Justice.
  • The Nominating Committee report was given and other nominations for synod positions and for voting members for the 2019 Churchwide Assembly.
  • Breakout sessions were based on the subthemes of the Assembly—how the Spirit blows through us and creates CURIOSITY, COURAGE and COMPASSION. Voting members chose one of those topics for learning, sharing and conversation with the intent of bringing our learning back home to our congregations.
  • First ballot votes were taken for positions mentioned above.
  • Two resolutions were presented to and discussed by the Assembly:
    • Commitment to more fully embracing the Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Identity of the Greater Milwaukee Synod—resolution was adopted.
    • Expanding support of Prison Congregations, Prison/Jail Re-entry Ministry and Prison Reform Advocacy—resolution was adopted.
  • A proposed amendment to the GMS Constitution and By-laws concerning voting member ratio was referred back to Synod Council for further discussion and reworking.
  • Global Mission reports were given regarding our two companion synods: The Meru Diocese of Tanzania and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of El Salvador.
Saturday
  • Second ballot for synod positions listed above
  • Outreach for Hope Report
  • Bishop’s Report
  • Lutheran Campus Ministry Report
  • Synod Council Report
  • Further discussion of 2019 Budget—Adopted
  • Installation of those elected
  • Sending

Notes/Highlights/Impressions

The Winds of the Spirit stir up:

CURIOSITY: CURIOSITY helps us to recognize that we don’t know it all. CURIOSITY is a tool for deepening both new and old relationships. CURIOSITY invites others to tell their stories and share their points of view.

COURAGE: Curiosity requires the COURAGE to be vulnerable. Remembering that God is always present and eager to help us will bring us COURAGE.

COMPASSION: Can we learn to express COMPASSION by viewing others as other than:
  • A problem to solve?
  • An opponent to defeat?
  • An enemy to fear?
These are at the heart of COMPASSION.

The Winds of the Spirit create:

VITAL CONGREGATIONS: Communities of Jesus that foster life-changing relationships with God, with others and with the world.

FAVORITE QUOTES from the Assembly:

There’s no grace period. There’s only grace. Period.

You want to change the world? Show up!

Jesus says: Take up your CURIOSITY and ask what needs to be critically examined?
Jesus says: Take up your COURAGE and follow me, doing the hard work of creating justice, love and peace.
Jesus says: Take up your COMPASSION and walk toward people, not away from them. Discover how to build understanding by truly hearing others’ stories. Then build COMMUNITY.

Midwest “Nice” means nothing more than Nothing Is Critically Examined.

Community Garden plots

The Community Garden plots are available and ready for spring planting! You may request any size plot. The garden is open to people in the church and to members of the community at large. This is ideal for apartment dwellers or anyone who does not have a sunny space at home for a garden. The produce is for your own family's enjoyment. If we are blessed with an abundance of produce, the Food Pantry always appreciates fresh vegetables.
