In 2016, Sarah Whipple retired from her long and fruitful career with EACMSI. Sarah began working at our school in the mid 1980's, serving as the business/facilities administrator for ten years. In 1996 she began teaching in our Primary/Extended Day program. Over the span of Sarah's career at EACMSI she touched many lives, and instilled a love of nature and gardening in many of her students.
In March of 2017 Alum parent and landscape architect, Kim Michaels, along with Primary Teacher Virginia Spiers, designed a plan for the Sarah Whipple Courtyard, including a variety of perennial gardens as well as a number of raised beds and cold frames for edible plants and flowers to be used for a variety of classroom activities.
Our Middle School students along with faculty began preparing the soil in April of 2017, after which they helped to build the first of the raised beds. Primary students have worked to maintain this garden with Virginia's help.
Now, a little over a year later, we are ready to expand the area to provide even more beauty and bounty in the Sarah Whipple Courtyard. Middle School students have recently removed all of the sod and hauled in many pounds of soil, making the new garden space ready for planting.

A little more information: As a "mini-course" this year, students will be working with Virginia to expand the perennial gardens to cover the entirety of the west wall of the Courtyard. We will be adding plants that will display more color for the spring and fall, as well as a variety of foliage to appreciate throughout the year. We are looking forward to watching how the added beauty in the Sarah Whipple Courtyard will be enjoyed by all of those passing by, as well as used in occasional art lessons, science lessons, and everyday nature exploration. It's exciting to watch this area expand in size and beauty.
