The Letter From The Consulate

No. 100.
Gentofte/Copenhagen, Thursday 14. June 2018
Dear reader,

The Albanian government has done a tough and serious job lobbying for the start of the EU membership negotiations. So let´s hope that the EU summit on June 28 - 29. will take the right decision and open the negotiations. It will mean a lot to the Albanians and not at all harm the EU citizens. On the contrary.

The report from EU parliament rapporteur Knut Fleckenstein is 100% clear: Let us start the negotiations - now!.
Rapporteur for Albania at the European Parliament MEP Knut Fleckenstein said Albania had made clear progress in issues related to the rule of law, urging for the opening of European Union (EU) membership talks for the country. He made these comments in an address to the European Parliament after its Committee on Foreign Affairs presented its positive recommendations on Albania in a 35-point report on the reforms undertaken in the country. MEP Fleckenstein suggested the progress made in Albania as regards the rule of law could even be considered at a higher level than in some EU states. The above-mentioned report called however for more efforts in terms of fighting corruption in all its levels and for stronger consensus among the various parties as regarded issues related to the country’s EU integration path. Republic of North Macedonia!
President of the Republic Ilir Meta and Prime Minister Edi Rama welcomed on Tuesday the agreement reached by official Athens and Skopje to call the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia by the name of Republic of North Macedonia. For President Meta this was a historic agreement that would help consolidate the Euro-Atlantic prospects of the Balkans’ region. “Two progressive leaders of neighboring countries made history today and showed the European Union and the world how vision and willingness to overcome the past can find space for the future where there appears to be none! Chapeau Alexis Tsipras and Zoran Zaev! The Balkans are today a better place thanks to you both,” Rama said in a posting on his official Twitter account.

TIRANA June 11. - Minister of Economy and Finance, Arben Ahmetaj, through a press conference stated that employment in Albania continues with the upward trend, while there is a historic decline in the level of unemployment.

"Today, the INSTAT report is published and the upward trend in employment is confirmed. The very good news is the decline in unemployment at the lowest historical level, 12.5%. Albania remains at the lowest rate of youth unemployment. This year thousands of new jobs have been announced".

The unemployment rate fell to 12.5% at the end of the first quarter 2018, marking the lowest historical level since the 1990s, according to INSTAT. The main impact has been the decline in unemployment for men who has fallen by 3 percentage points, while women have remained almost unchanged. Employment growth was driven mainly by the industry and service sector, INSTAT notes. A statement from the Consulate.
Read an appeal to Danish politicians to support opening of EU negotiations with Albania.

A statement from the Albanian "opposition" (DP).
Democratic Party Chair Lulzim Basha said Prime Minister Edi Rama’s strategy to the present had been to put up a false facade of things going well in Albania, a facade Basha claimed had failed, thus exposing the government to the world. Basha made these comments in a press statement on Monday, adding that international partners and media had exposed what he said was the government’s failure to fulfill the criteria for the opening of European Union (EU) membership talks. “The opening of EU membership talks and Albania’s integration in it is not a process of advertisements and lobbying, but a process of real European behavior,” Basha said.

That´s all for now,
sincerely,

Hans-Georg Nielsen
Albanian Honorary Consul
