4 Tips to Consider If You Want to Revamp Your Outdoor Living Space

The days are longer, the weather is finally warm, and you find yourself searching for every excuse to spend more time outside. But if your home’s outdoor living area leaves a little to be desired, you’ll want to make some changes and breathe new life into the space.

Here are some tips for turning your outdoor living area into the perfect place for entertaining guests this spring and summer:

Visualize your ideal scenario
Before you begin any work, it’s important to dream up a detailed picture of the kind of space you hope to create. A few questions to ask yourself include:

  • What kinds of activities would I like to do here? Maybe you hope to host your entire extended family for a cookout and touch football game. Perhaps you’d just like to have enough space for a few close friends to gather for a bonfire. Developing your dream scenario helps you maximize your space accordingly, and makes choosing the furniture and layout much easier.
  • What kind of furniture do you imagine in the space? Speaking of furniture, you’ll want to select the pieces you use in your outdoor living area wisely. If you have your heart set on a pair of Adirondack chairs, for example, then you’ll need to factor in the large amount of surface area that these pieces require. If you plan on doing a lot of entertaining, you’ll want to consider how you’ll accommodate enough seating and table space to keep your guests comfortable.

When you have a better idea about how you’ll use your outdoor living space, it’s easier to break down the design process step by step. If you need some help with this aspect, we have a tool we love.

Belgard has created this project visualizer to help you more easily imagine your ideal outdoor living space. If you’re looking for a more defined sense of direction about the possibilities available for your outdoor living space, we suggest taking this quiz from Techo-Bloc to get a better sense of your priorities and goals for the area.

Find inspiration as you travel

If you’ve got weddings and other trips on the calendar, use these experiences as opportunities to gain inspiration for your home. Even if you’re just out at a friend’s house or a restaurant, take note of your surroundings. What pieces do you love? What’s the atmosphere like? What would you like to replicate in your own outdoor living space? You may find it helpful to jot down notes or take pictures so that you can easily remember what you experienced.

Think about the focal point

Whether it’s a fire pit, a trampoline, a garden, or a water feature, identify which element should get the most attention, and then plan the rest of the area accordingly. Make sure that the seating in the space allows for a good view of the desired focal point.

Envision it as an extension of your indoor living space

We always tell clients that the activities that they love doing in their indoor living space can continue outdoors, too, so build accordingly. Create a place that’s great for family game nights, performances of kid-developed plays, and games of fetch with your dog. The area should feel warm, welcoming, and inviting.
