Famously Franglais

Chansons in both English and en français

For this Wednesday's ukulélé jam, we'll play some chansons in both English and en français. English songs with a few French lyrics, ou bien des chansons en français avec quelques paroles in English.

Okay, I'll stop with the Franglais message now, I know it has the potential to drive both French and English speakers up the wall.

This theme idea came about when the request to learn 'Love' by Fuso came my way. A current French tune with an English chorus that reminded me of other various hits like 'I Lost My Baby' (Jean Leloup) and Hélène (Roch Voisine). Of course there is our perpetual Daniel Lanois jam favorites: 'Under A Stormy Sky' and 'Jolie Louise'. Now these songs are all predominantly French songs that were probably most relevant to the francophone music scene.

Yet there is this other set of hits that are predominantly in English, but with French choruses. The exact reverse situation: 'Psycho Killer' (Talking Heads), 'Lady Maramalade' (hit by literally everyone - first one by Labelle), and of course 'Michelle' (Beatles).

Then there is the set of tunes that are translated, ex. La Vie En Rose, Les Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Leaves) and many more that are relevant hits in both languages.

So I hope you'll join me at the Clocktower Pub on Wednesday to shamelessly blend our two official languages. Ça va être un 'good time'.

Ukebox Brewery Tour:
Next Stop - Covered Bridge Brewing Co. in Stittsville!

This month, on June 13th (2nd Wednesday of the month), we'll be at the Covered Bridge Brewing Co in Stittsville (Suite #6 119 Iber Road. Ottawa). This is a great little brewery on the edge of town in the west end. It has beer offerings such as the Lumbersexual Session IPA, Eternally Hoptimistic Pale Ale, and the Moustache Smash. Perhaps you've seen their products in the LCBO. On top of that, they've got a food truck with a great menu right outside their door for those of you who want to come for dinner. I'll let you know more about the menu in next week's newsletter.

They have built a small tap room at the back that will serve us well. It's a smaller room than we're used to but we're also further out from the centre, so we'll see how it works out. It should be fun cozy night.

This is the 4th installment of our travelling brewery tour and probably the last stop until the fall. We'll continue to do the 1st Wednesday of the month jams throughout the summer at the Clocktower, our home pub but the 2nd week jams will be on hiatus until September.
