Crop Growth and Development
Depending on where you are located we have recently planted corn to V7. Emerged corn will develop a new leaf every 84 growing degree days (GDD). Generally speaking, the corn along the southern edge of my area is looking good, but in some places was starting to roll leaves by noon each day in the high heat of last week. The corn in the northern area also looks good, just further behind due to a late start on planting. We are in the middle of post-application of herbicides on corn. The odds and ends in corn include fomesafen carryover and ALS carryover, both primarily due to dry conditions last year and found on some lighter soils. I have had reports of some spotty black cutworm activity (continue to scout until V5) and I have had some hail damage inquiries on corn. I have had no reports of corn seedling diseases.
Soybeans are still being planted to V2-V3. We have had some emergence issues due to crusting soils and I have done several field calls to assess hail injury on soybeans. For those still planting beans we would encourage you to wait until near June 20 to switch to shorter maturities. For those making decisions on whether to replant beans due to hail injury, see Hail on Soybean in Iowa, pg 2-3. You can download this publication at no charge.
Herbicide and Weed Management
Now is the prime time to evaluate pre-emerge herbicide products and in several weeks, post-emerge herbicide products for efficacy. Illinois recently posted a summary of Corn Growth Stage and Postemergence Herbicides allowed at various growth stages. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has several opportunities for you when creating a herbicide resistance management plan. We offer a Herbicide Resistance and Weed Management Online Course. available through this link. We are also hosting a Herbicide Resistance Management Field Day on Tuesday, June 12 from 5-7 p.m. There is no charge to attend this field day. We will look at effective herbicides, effective rates and effective timing as key principles to herbicide resistance management. If you have questions about this field day please feel free to contact me.
