RTC Board Lowers Cost of Bus Passes for Everyone, Extends Reduced Fares to Veterans and More Seniors

The RTC Board recently approved making bus passes more affordable for everyone and extending reduced-fare eligibility to benefit Veterans and seniors. The RTC is also simplifying transit-fare options to make buying a bus pass easier and to encourage more people to use transit.

University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) students will also benefit from new, lower bus pass prices.

When these new fare changes go into effect this fall, Veterans will be eligible for reduced transit fares and the age for reduced senior-fare eligibility will decrease from age 65 to 60, allowing more seniors and now Veterans to qualify for reduced fares.

The new fare structure will ensure the availability of affordable public transportation to everyone, provide fare equity among public transportation services and passenger categories, and provide a strong incentive for transit use to help reduce region-wide traffic congestion, air pollution and fuel consumption. Overall, this will help to increase transit ridership.

New transit pricing includes:
  • The 24-Hour Pass will change to a Day Pass. Prices will be reduced from $5.00 to $3.00 (regular cost) and $2.50 to $1.50 (reduced cost). Transfers will be eliminated. Day Passes will expire at midnight of the same day of activation.
  • The 7-Day Pass price will be reduced from $19.50 to $14.50 (regular cost) and $9.75 to $6.00 (reduced cost).
  • The 31-Day Disabled Pass price will be $32.50.
  • Veterans will qualify for the reduced-fare rate offered to seniors, youth and individuals with disabilities.
  • The price of student Wolf Pass and TMCC bus passes will decrease from $230 to $147 annually, or $73.50 for a six-month pass.
  • The price of a single trip for individuals with disabilities will decrease from $1.00 to $0.75. The price of a single trip for an ACCESS ID holder will change from $0.50 to $0.75.
These changes will become effective on September 4, 2018.

The May 2018 SouthEast Connector flyover video highlights construction progress to date. See how far we've come by watching the May 2016 video, below.

SouthEast Connector Will Open to Traffic in July

The SouthEast Connector is currently at 95% completion and we are looking forward to celebrating with the community as we get ready to open the road. The new roadway, which will be dedicated as Veterans Parkway, benefits the region by reducing traffic congestion and creating a more efficient and safe alternative for commuters who travel between south Reno and east Reno/Sparks.

Save the dates! The RTC is planning a community-wide grand opening celebration and road preview with a walk, run and bike event tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 30. The road is anticipated to officially open to traffic on July 6, preceded by the official grand opening ceremony. More details will be available in the coming weeks at SouthEastConnector.com, RTC social media pages and in the next edition of the eNews.

Crews have been making progress on the three final construction activities, including paving, constructing the Huffaker Bridge and finishing the Mira Loma intersection. The Mira Loma intersection is expected to reopen on June 2, but until then, drivers can use Pembroke as a detour. The RTC appreciates everyone's patience during construction.

The SouthEast Connector is not open just yet and the RTC is asking the public to please respect the construction zone. For everyone's safety, please stay out of the project site as there is active construction occurring.
Watch the May 2016 SouthEast Connector flyover video to see how much crews have accomplished over the course of two years of construction.

Temporary I-80 On/Off-Ramp Closures Coming as Part of 4th Street/Prater Way Project

Construction continues to progress on the 4th Street/Prater Way Bus RAPID Transit Project. As part of the construction process, the RTC plans to temporarily close the I-80 on/off-ramps at E. 4th Street and Prater Way for construction work starting on Monday, June 4 through Saturday, June 16. 4th Street and Prater Way will also close to traffic from Galletti Way to El Rancho Drive during the same time period. These closures will be in effect 24-hours-a-day.

The work is part of the 4th Street/Prater Way Bus RAPID Transit Project. Crews will be removing existing asphalt, paving, striping and adding new signage.

By closing this area to traffic, crews are able to complete this work in two weeks. If they were to continue allowing traffic through, it would take six weeks, extending the total construction time the public would be impacted in this area. The RTC appreciates everyone’s patience during the construction process.

The RTC will provide access to all businesses in this area during the closure, including Motel 6 Reno Airport - Sparks, Pony Express Lodge, McCarran Auto Body, Coney Island Bar, Metro City Carwash, Chevron, CEMEX and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Drivers are asked to follow the business-access signs that will be in place.

Detours will be in place and drivers are asked to use the following alternate routes:

I-80 On- and Off-Ramp Detours:
  •  I-80 westbound off-ramp to E. 4th Street/Prater Way: Use McCarran Boulevard, Pyramid Way or Rock Boulevard.
  • E. 4th Street/Prater Way on-ramp to I-80 westbound: Use Rock Boulevard.
  • I-80 eastbound off ramp to E. 4th Street/Prater Way: Use Rock Boulevard.
  • E. 4th Street/Prater Way on-ramp to I-80 eastbound: Use Rock Boulevard.
Surface-Street Detours for 4th/Prater between Galletti Way – El Rancho Drive:
  • Heading eastbound on 4th Street: Use Galletti Way to Glendale Avenue to Rock Boulevard.
  • Heading westbound on Prater Way: Use El Rancho Drive to Oddie Boulevard.
Business-Access Routes:
  • Coney Island Bar: Use Galletti Way and follow business-access signs.
  • McCarran Auto Body: Use El Rancho Drive to D Street to View Street.
  • Motel 6 Reno Airport - Sparks: Use Victorian Avenue.
  • Pony Express Lodge: Use a special, temporary access point to the rear of the lodge off of D Street from El Rancho.
  • Howard’s Chevron: Use 4th Street eastbound or Galletti Way.
  • CEMEX: Use Galletti Way
  • Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles: Use Galletti Way.
  • Metro City Carwash: Use Victorian to El Rancho
The RTC urges drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to be safe and to use extra caution in construction work zones.

Construction operations are weather permitting. For the latest updates, text 4PRATER to 797979, or visit 4thPrater.com to sign up for email notifications.

The work is part of an overall $58-million investment in the community to better connect Downtown Reno and Downtown Sparks and provide access to jobs and education opportunities. The 4th Street/Prater Way Bus RAPID Transit Project involves widening sidewalks, adding bike lanes, adding new landscaping, and moving utilities underground. The final component of the project will be a new RAPID bus line called the Lincoln Line, debuting in late 2018. The new RAPID service celebrates the famous Lincoln Highway. Completion of road construction and RAPID stations is anticipated in fall of 2018.

Pyramid/McCarran Intersection Improvement Project
Wins Two Awards

The RTC's Pyramid/McCarran Intersection Improvement Project recently won two awards. The RTC and its project partners received the 2018 John L. Martin Partnered Project of the Year Diamond Award from the International Partnering Institute. The Diamond Award is the highest achievement and reflects cooperation throughout the project, on-time completion, and staying within the project's budget.

The Associated General Contractors (ACG) Nevada Chapter also gave the project contractor, Granite Construction, a Pinnacle Award for General Engineering Contractors and Contracts Innovation for Projects Over $5M.

These awards reflect the significance this project represents for the region and the partnerships we have with our community and local consultants, design firms, and construction companies.

NDOT To Resurface Alternate U.S. 395 Through Pleasant and Washoe Valleys

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has started construction to resurface the U.S. 395 alternate route through Pleasant and Washoe Valleys.

Drivers should be aware of potential single lane closures on Alternate U.S. 395 just south of Mt. Rose Highway. Over the coming months, the road work will progress south with daytime single lane closures in both directions of Alternate U.S. 395 through Pleasant and Washoe Valleys. The lane closures will primarily take place Mondays through Fridays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Access to side roads and driveways will be maintained during construction.

During road work on the two-lane segment of U.S. 395A in Washoe Valley, traffic flaggers and pilot cars will alternate directions of traffic through the work zone, with up to 30-minute travel delays to be expected. The road work is anticipated to end in late summer.

The project will resurface more than 16 miles of Alternate U.S. 395 between Mt. Rose Highway and the Washoe County/Carson City line. Known as a double chip seal, two layers of new asphalt and roadway gravel will be placed on the road and sealed with a top layer of oil. Segments of additional roadside fencing and sixteen cattle-guards will be installed in certain areas of Pleasant Valley to reduce vehicle/wild horse collisions and enhance highway safety. Some narrower areas of paved roadway shoulder will also be widened to provide extra travel room for bicyclists.

The just over $3 million in roadway improvements by contractor Intermountain Slurry Seal will provide a smoother drive for the approximately 2,400 motorists who travel the road daily. The interim road surface improvements will help preserve the roadway until it is fully excavated and repaved as needed in future years.

State highway information is available at nevadadot.com or by calling (775) 888-7000.
