LA FPI May 2018 eBlast!

Making Connections

I come from and now live in Hawaii. I've been getting messages from friends on the mainland asking me "Are you covered in lava yet?" Makes me think about how crazy the world is, everyday, not just in crazy times like these. How small the world has become in some senses because we are so closely connected but at the same time, yes: we live hundreds of miles apart and we don't really know what life is like in places we don't visit every day. (What's going on on the next island?)

And it makes me appreciate all the different people I've met through these shared experiences. How our perceptions of one another shape our thoughts and actions. As artists, we pull our inspiration from all around us. Considering these colorful landscapes, portraits, and dialogues in our lives can be the starting point for creating something new. Give us something to write about.

We'll hope to see you on May 26th 1-4pm at Sam French for our annual #FringeFemmes Gathering! This is always a great event, a chance to get a peek at what's up ahead from this year's "Women on the Fringe" and hang out before #HFF18 begins. (And no, you don't have to be involved in the Fringe, or be a woman, to join us!)

And Mark Your Calendars! June 14 is our 2nd LA FPI Night at the Geffen Playhouse—you don't want to miss the chance to see Dominique Morriseau's SKELETON CREW with us for $25 (with a cocktail included!)

Love After Death, a one-woman show by Brittany Stahl. What happens when love meets anxiety? And OCD? And depression? Writer Brittany Stahl doesn't pretend to know the answers but she sure has fun trying to figure them out. What originally began as an exploration of the fear of falling in love has now emerged as a series of character sketches that anyone who has ever had a faulty defense mechanism is sure to relate to. Stahl presents each of her coping "skills" and puts them to the test in a delicately balanced comedic excavation of her self. Premiering at the end of Mental Health Awareness Month, Love After Death is an accessible and humorous examination of mental illness without shame or apology. Presented by The Happy/Sad Artist Collective. More info here.

Mulatto Math, created by Monique DeBose, explores race, family and identity through her unique lens of being born to an African American father and Irish upstate New York mother. Directed by Denise Dowse. More info at mulattomath.com.
