JUNE 2018

Fiber Artists of San Antonio

JUNE PROGRAM:
Alejandrina Cue will give a presentation of her work, titled La Vida a Mano (Life by Hand) to FASA on June 11

Alejandrina was invited to come to San Antonio by the Fiber Artists of San Antonio.
She is well known for producing whimsical art with a mix of textiles, paint,
writing, and found objects. She creates incredibly imaginative examples of mixed media
fiber art that fascinates and amuses the viewer. She often uses the female figure as her
subject, exhibiting characteristics of strength as well as delicacy with a heavy dose of
symbolism. Growing up in a household of women who sewed, she began to experiment
with fabric scraps as a child. Because there is a scarcity of art materials in Cuba, she
uses a potpourri of unusual materials, sometimes discarded, and includes them in her
work with fabric. This combination adds depth, emotion, and mystery to her work. She
specializes in free hand needle techniques, and includes poetry and words.

She has been recognized by art critics in the Cuban culture as the Precursor of
Patchwork, influencing the use of patchwork and stitchery, and is one of Cuba’s most
outstanding visual artists. She received first prize in “The Hundred Feeders”
competition sponsored by The Vatican. Cue was in the top ten competition for the
UNESCO Prize for Latin American Artists. She has exhibited in Australia, Spain,
Switzerland, Portugal, Columbia Venezuela, Tokyo, the United States, France and
Cuba, and was part of the Havana Biennial. Her art was published in The Magical Art of
Cuba. After her education in Cuba, she studied extensively at the Bihl Haus in Dessao,
Germany and received a Masters in Industrial Design Scientific Center for Design VTK
in Meissen, Germany.

You're Invited: Alejandrina Cue, mixed media fiber artist from Havana, Cuba, will exhibit her work at the Marisol Deluna Foundation, 418 Villita Street, Building 22, 78205 on Tuesday, June 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. Parking is free on Tuesday evenings in many locations nearby after 6 p.m.. Enter by
the side gate on Villita Street. Please join us at the Marisol Deluna Foundation to meet Alejandrina Cue and enjoy a delightful evening of artistic surprises from Cuba.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES

FASA Co-President IDA DE LA ROSA SPENCE had a previous "engagement" - and wedding!

Ida and friends and family celebrated her marriage to Craig Daniel Ellis on Saturday, May 26th at 1:00 PM at Leanin Dipper Ranch in Bandera - much joy to you both!

From Co-President Bonnie Davis:

FASA members have a unique opportunity to explore many avenues of interest.
Let’s all feel connected in 2018-2019, even though we have different passions.
Let’s have fun and learn from each other.

“ Drench yourself in words unspoken, live your life with arms wide open. Today is
where your life begins...The rest is still unwritten”
. Natasha Bedingfield

May ‘CONNECT’ be the word for FASA in 2018-2019.

More from Bonnie:

FASA members are great, fun, people. We want to get to know each other.
Let’s start with something we can all do...Each will be unique and different.
 Do you have a needle?
 Do you have some thread?
Do you have some scraps of fabric....I know you do.
Put thread thru needle, to tie or not tie a knot is up to u.
Stick needle into fabric ...TA DA
There is no turning back now, you are on your way to ARTISTRY.
Let’s make this fun, any color of thread (white DMC maybe, but try different colors also )
Any combination of fabrics will work. Start with a piece of muslin, or white fabric and place fabric over and under each other, OR place any way you want.
Adding beads is easy and fun also, all you have to do is find a needle with a hole big enough to thread bead or a bead small enough to go thru the needle.
I guarantee you will enjoy this, remember I’m the one that hates sewing. And I fell in love with sewing scrapes.

Introducing VP Cynthia Anderson

Greetings to our wonderful, wild, and talented FASA members.

My name is Cynthia Anderson and I'm your new VP. Just wanted to take a minute and thank you for entrusting me with this exciting new adventure. I love the gathering of creative souls sharing their artist spirit, their story, and most of all sharing their strength, courage, wisdom and kindness of their art self. I know FASA has a great history (her story) in bringing all forms of art to our creative and unique group..With great teachers, classes using ancient to modern techniques, and maybe even learning something strange and so outside our wheel house ..but what opportunities we have been given. So I hope to carry on this great adventure with your support, encouragement, and just a little wildness let this be the best days to come.

In  the July meeting we will have" in house artist" share their work plus share technique, that we will take part in..So when I have the finale details, and artist it will be announced and all the information on what you may need to bring to this meeting..If you would just like to be...just bring your sweet self and enjoy. I look forward to getting to know each and everyone of you and maybe we can walk on the wild side together or just share a thought, a moment..  From one of the great movie quotes  "I See You" Avatar

Yes ..I would like to see you and be apart of your art adventure...

Best Art Life...Cynthia Anderson (aka) Cynthy

FASA SPUTNIK UPDATE

SPUTNIK Meeting Minutes

June meeting will be Sunday the 10th at 2pm at Jean Dahlgren’s studio at 240 East Huisache, SATX 78212.

The 6 May FASA Spirited, Passionate, Uninhibited, Thoughtful, Nurturing, Innovative, Kind (SPUTNIK) meeting adjourned at 2 pm, with a full group of passionate artists. Several artists brought their own chairs which was a great help.
  • Sunny Rakowitz is hosting a Storylines (now called “Lifelines”) workshop for the Children’s Transplant Organization.  She needs instructors for the Storylines techniques to teach the staff at the Transplant organization.   Contact her at sunneerakowitz@gmail.com if you can help.
    • The first staff workshop will be on May 11th from 10-ish to 2-ish at location to be determined.  That will not be the only opportunity, just the first of what we project to be several throughout the next few months.  I expect about 5 -10 of us to collaborate with the staff members on that day.
    • Here is a list of items I project we will/could/might use for the project.  It is not considered a complete or exhaustive by any means and we will use whatever we have and can accumulate between now and the Rotary cutters, scissors (both paper and cloth), self-healing mats (I have  a big one I will bring, but it might be nice to have 1-2 smaller ones.)  measuring tapes, rulers, fabric marking pens, pencils,Sewing threads, hand sewing needles, thimbles, freezer paper, iron and ironing board (I'll bring mine) Crayons, heavy paper or card stock, Yarn, lace, buttons, fabric scraps with interesting motifs, fabric glue, stencils and colored Derwent pencils or others, paintstiks, iron on adhesives and anything else you think could be combined into a Story Line.  You can chose which items you need for demoing...we will all  bring stuff, don't think you have to bring everything on this list
    • Lastly, please bring your beautiful, creative, artistic Story Line(s) so we have some examples.
    • If you would (please) like to demonstrate your talent at a demo table, please tell me what you will demo and how long you think it will take to show. We will demo some after the viewing of the Story Lines and then break into groups to work.
    • This should get your creative juices flowing.
    • There will be adults and children working with their families when we help with the general groups later on.
Art journaling!
May’s prompt is working on your pages in the Diversity of Art book!  If you want to catch up, the prompts have been mandala; origami/folding/textile manipulation; self-portrait; home; map/travel; design a logo for your name; the first day of school, Halloween, what we are thankful for, selfies, and FIESTA. Places to Shop-Learn-Show:
  • Fabrictopia is now air conditioned! They have some amazing stuff in with the not so amazing stuff.  An artist recently found Robert Kaufman Co. linen and rayon on bolts for $10/yd.  There is a 50% off barrel in the front, make sure to look for it.  Another artist recommended checking prices at the front before having it cut.  The prices on the bolt aren’t usually accurate.    https://fabrictopiatexas.com/
  • One of our artists will be showing 3 June at the Arnold Art Gallery in Mason, TX.  She brought in some beautiful bugs(!) made with needle turned applique and embroidery on kimono linen.  She mounted them on archival board.
  • This month at the Artisan Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX, Pamela Studstill will be showing.  https://americanart.si.edu/artist/pamela-studstill-6283 She paints on quilts.  https://artisanstexas.com/
  • An artist brought in a neat article made with Texas stamps from Deadbeat Designs http://www.deadbeatstamps.com/stamps.cfm?id=34
  • There’s a great article by Melissa Goldberg in the Oprah magazine called “Little by Little” about making tiny pieces of art.
  • An artist recommended Four Kings restaurant in Converse, TX as a great place to eat with scratch made breads, soups and sandwiches.  They also have a bakery.  http://fourkings.letseat.at/
  • The latest finds at the Dollar Tree include a Pocket Knitter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJL1J7r4oGI and a Red Heart ruffle yarn http://www.redheart.com/learn/videos/learn-how-knit-sashay
  • An artist told a wonderful story about a Dallas area batik shop and batik scrap bags she gets from them.  http://www.fabricfanatics.com/index.htm
  • Amol’s Party Store has moved to 227 Fredericksburg Rd!  They now have parking!  https://www.amols.com/
Discussion:
  • We discussed the pages for our Diversity of Art book and decided we would all sign in the same place on the page, the bottom right of the front page (only).  Sandee and Cyndi will make the front cover, Deb is making the back cover.  The pages are due to Carmen by the July meeting.
  • We also discussed the Kenectivities Members’ Installation and encouraged everyone to create something with movement mounted on a 12” x 12” canvas.  We discussed dangles and decided no dangles off the bottom of the piece as it might interfere with anything placed below.  You can come off the canvas perpendicularly to make the piece 3D.  These pieces will be part of the December FASA Annual Show so need to be ready to install by mid-December.
 Presentation:
Shirlene led the group through Artist Trading Card making.  She had lots of bits and bobs to share and some folks brought some of their stash, too.  Some folks brought in sample ATCs.  Everyone had a fun time making these amazing bits of art!
Presentation Schedule:
These will be about 10-15 minutes unless otherwise noted.  Volunteers to present your passion are welcome.

Report from Terry Gay Puckett
I just returned from Guatemala, one of the most beautiful places in the world, Land of the Eternal Spring. I am missing my scrumptious breakfasts of mango, banana bread, yogurt and elderberry Jam and  long for the first morning glimpse of volcanoes across the lake, partially covered with fluffy white clouds.

My friends and traveling companions shopped vigorously for huipiles, beaded jewelry, jade, and paintings by indigenous artists, adding our Quetzales (money) to the economic growth of the country. Some went zip lining, others went birding. Some collaged, sketched, and  wrote poetry while sitting by the pool.  We walked with San Antonio landscape architect Sarah Lake through the six acres of outrageously beautiful tropical gardens at Hotel Atitlan.

Fun? Yes.  That is why I have been there about 14 times.  Don’t miss it if you can. Hasta luego Guatemala!

FASA COMMUNITY SERVICE

Food Pantry – Alamo Heights Christian Church (AHCC)

Here is some pertinent information from the website of AHCC about hunger in America.  “According to the USDA, 1 in 6 children in this country are food insecure – meaning that millions of children lack regular and easy access to the means they need to thrive.”

This is an example from San Antonio at the AHCC Food Pantry.  “On Tuesday, 16 January, 2018, a day when many businesses and schools in San Antonio were closed due to weather, the AHCC Food Pantry was open.  We provided food for five families who braved the elements to get food.  One young woman, the mother of six children, came to us with hopeful anticipation that we could help.  Her husband was not working that day due to the weather and stayed home, but there were mouths to feed, so she came to the AHCC Food Pantry for help.  We filled her car with boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables, canned food and meats, enough for a week or more.”

AHCC operates on a shoestring budget, and its Food Pantry is funded totally on donations. Only on donations.

Please consider making a small contribution, of food or funds (if a check, made out to AHCC, with “Food Pantry” in the memo line).

Footnote: Food Pantry personnel have told me they are currently low on one or two pound bags of rice and/or dry pinto beans.

EDUCATION
We’re going to do something innovative for our July meeting.  After all of the wonderful artists we’ve seen during Show and Tell this past year, we’ve decided to showcase three to four members, and perhaps even add a little hands on activity.  At a recent meeting, Bonnie Davis showed us examples of her recent inspirations and challenged us to create a small art piece using scraps of fabric, embroidery thread, beads, and all kinds of odds and ends.  It would have been fun to start one right then.  We just don’t seem to have enough time to enjoy each other’s talents during a regular program, so we’re going to create a program that will do nothing but highlight our “In-House Talent”.  We already have one FASA volunteer, but we would like two to three additional members that would take 20-30 minutes to showcase their talents.  We might even figure out how to incorporate a mini workshop.  We’ll work out all of the details a bit later, and we’ll help you put this together and all have fun while learning.  It will not only inspire us but perhaps get us going on a new path.  Who knows what will come of this.
Please contact Cynthia Anderson and volunteer as soon as possible so we can get started on the possibilities. July will be here soon.   I’ve seen abundant talent in our organization and want to learn more from each of you.  I’m excited about the prospects.

SNIPPETS: Little tidbits of interest from your editor

Everyone knows that Japanese fiber art, from Boro to Shibori, is popular right now - but here's a new Japanese art form for you - embroidered food.

Japanese thread artist Ipnot has created a wonderfully whimsical series of embroidered foods that reflect such amazing detail, making them so realistic that they each look good enough to eat. Ipnot also animates some of her embroidered food through stop-motion films such as a bottle of Coca-Cola bubbling over and a sushi roll made from still-packaged thread. She also demonstrates how she achieves such authenticity through instructional videos on her YouTube channel. Sushi, anyone??
Enjoy!!

The deadline for the FASA Newsletter is the 25th of each month. We'd love to have your news about shows, techniques, galleries, events - send an email to me if you'd like to be included!
Remember, fiber is good for you!
