With The School Year Coming To An End, We Need To Address What Happens Over The Summer...

The Summer Slide

Ed Campos translates the TTM newsletters into Spanish, and this week's will be available soon. Also, be sure to share with friends that many of the Spanish Table Talk Math newsletters are available!

If you are like many across the country, or even the world, the end of the school year is either here or almost here and the next phase of your child/student's life is about to begin: SUMMMMERRRR!!!

Wait... you aren't excited about that?

According to multiple studies, the legend of The Summer Slide is a very real thing. From Brookings:

  • On average, students’ achievement scores declined over summer vacation by one month’s worth of school-year learning.
  • Declines were sharper for math than for reading.
  • The extent of loss was larger at higher grade levels.
  • Importantly, they also concluded that income-based reading gaps grew over the summer, given that middle class students tended to show improvement in reading skills while lower-income students tended to experience loss.
OK, now that we know the problem, how do we fix it? I don't have the perfect answer, but what I am working towards is providing students the opportunity to continue nurturing their knowledge, even when they aren't in a classroom for 10 weeks.

First, Table Talk Math is built with a myriad of prompts that parents can try out at home. Have you checked it out?

Second, you can go to tabletalkmath.com/resources for a list of free places to venture and find new prompts and ideas, no matter what grade level your child is entering.

Third, and I am really excited about this, I have built out a summer course. What makes this different is that students go at their own pace, it is all online, and new content comes out every 5 days after you sign up. The goal of this is to keep students fresh with content they just learned as they see one problem every 5 days, but also prepare them for the grade they are entering. The hidden bonus for parents is the video that accompanies each prompt, giving me the chance to share how I would do the problem. Add in the comment section and you have the makings of a supportive community.

As of now, the course I have built out is for incoming 3rd graders. Based on the feedback I receive, next year would have grades 2 through 8 built out (if all goes well). If you are interested in enrolling, I am offering a special discount to all newsletter subscribers: 70% OFF!!! Just enter promo code NEWS in checkout and you have a summer full of prompts for less than $10.

If you are a teacher or administrator, please reach out to me directly and I can work with you on site licensing!

Have you taken the leap and picked up your copy of Table Talk Math? If so, I would be incredibly honored to have you leave a review on Amazon. It helps others get an idea of what kind of book they're getting and offers an extra insight that I would love to have.

Thank you for bringing math to the table!
