Consuming Mindfully

"At its most essential, the apple you hold is a manifestation of the wonderful presence of life. It is interconnected with all that is. It contains the whole universe; it is an ambassador of the cosmos coming to nourish our existence. It feeds our body, and if we eat it mindfully, it also feeds our soul and recharges our spirit."

-- Thich Nhat Hanh, Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life

Upcoming Meeting

Bell Minders Team

Our Bell Minders Team will meet at 5:30 pm this Sunday, June 3rd, prior to our regular sangha meeting time. We have a wonderful roster of mindful facilitators for our weekly gatherings from June-September this year, but if you are interested in (or just curious about) bell minding in the future, you are welcome to join us for instruction and discussion about our bell minding practice.

Sangha Library

Featured Book

In WorkThich Nhat Hanh offers guidance for dealing with workplace scenarios, home and family, encounters with strangers, transportation, and creating communities wherever you are. By carefully examining our everyday choices we can move in the direction of right livelihood; we can be a lotus in a muddy world by building mindful communities, learning about compassionate living, or by coming to understand the concept of “Buddha nature.” See sangha librarian Anne Graham if you wish to borrow this book.
Embracing Your Anger

"Anger is like a howling baby, suffering and crying. The baby needs his mother to embrace him. You are the mother for your baby, your anger. The moment you begin to practice breathing mindfully in and out, you have the energy of a mother, to cradle and embrace the baby. Just embracing your anger, just breathing in and breathing out, that is good enough. The baby will feel relief right away."

-- Thich Nhat Hanh, Anger: Wisdom for Cooling the Flames

BioBlitz @ Wintergreen Studios

Wintergreen Studios is currently hosting a free, “slow" BioBlitz (event in which scientists, naturalists, and the public gather to track and learn more about wildlife identification and explore the outdoors) over several days this week, May 30th - June 3rd, giving everyone a chance to form a deeper connection with the natural world, and challenging us to be more mindful and take the time to enjoy all the area and atmosphere has to offer.
Sangha member Stana Luxford Oddie will be offering a Forest Therapy workshop as part of the BioBlitz programming, which also includes arts activities, animal and insect conservation, foraging, and developing birding skills, to interactive musical exploration, guided nature hikes, and exploring the interrelationship between living things. See the full schedule and out more on the Wintergreen Studios Website.

Seeking (Temporary) Home

Sangha member Madelyn Iler shares a message from her friend, Nancy Guest, a kindergarten teacher from northern Manitoba who is coming to Kingston this summer from the second week of July until the end of the third week of August, and is looking for a room to rent with a budget of $1000 for the duration of her stay.  Please click here to read the full message, and contact Madelyn at 613-541-1684 if you are interested.

Sunday at KUF

Flower Communion

One of the most beautiful traditions in Unitarian Universalism, this Sunday, June 3rd at 10:30 am is Flower Communion Sunday at KUF. Everyone is invited to bring a few of your favorite flowers, or even flowers from your home, as we gather in our annual celebration of beauty, human uniqueness, diversity, and community. You will go home with a different flower from the one you brought, and hopefully with a new memory from our celebration. Rev. Beckett Coppola will be speaking.
Solid and Free

"Cultivate solidity. You are somebody; you are something. You are a positive factor for your family, for society, for the world. You have to recover yourself, to be yourself. You have to become solid again. You can practice solidity in everyday life. Every step, every breath you take should help you become more solid. When you have solidity, freedom is there too."

-- Thich Nhat Hanh, You Are Here: Discovering the Magic of the Present Moment
Our sangha has two teams helping to share leadership and facilitation of our meetings. Our Bell Minders Team are mindful facilitators for our weekly gatherings, as well as retreats, taking beautiful care of our friends in the practice including the bell. Our Sangha Care Team facilitates sangha care meetings, plans retreats, minds our library and resources, and coordinates outreach. If you are interested in helping with either or both, contact interbeingkingston@gmail.com for more information.
