GDPR Made Us Giggle

At Blacknight we welcome the strengthening of EU privacy laws because we’ve built our business on trust and supporting our customers. But we couldn’t help thinking that some people were overreacting a little, and some of the emails which flooded into our inboxes made us smile.

We’ve updated our data protection and related policies to specifically address the principles of GDPR, and you can read more about them here if you wish. Our information security management system is certified to ISO 27001. And to request access, amendment, or deletion of your personal data processed by us: simply email gdpr@blacknight.com.

Whois Services Have Changed

GDPR has led to significant changes in Whois services for domains. Prior to May 25th, it was possible to retrieve personal data regarding the registrant of a domain from a Whois query of that domain (unless the registrant had employed a proxy privacy service). Now most registrars and registries have redacted personal data from Whois results, to comply with GDPR.

Blacknight has updated its Whois service accordingly. Instead of publishing contact details, we provide a contact form to relay messages to domain holders from legitimate enquirers.

Continued Strong Demand for .IE Names

Interest in .IE domain names remains strong since registration requirements were liberalised in March. March was the busiest month of all time for .IE with 6,764 registrations, and now April has claimed the number two spot with 5,765. Once more Blacknight was the top registrar for .IE names, with 1,688 – almost 30% of all new .IE names registered.

15 Years On: How WordPress Won the Web
