CHANGING LIVES IN TANZANIA | SUMMER 2018
SHINYANGA UPDATE
In December, children received food from LOHADA in Shinyaya, where drought and flooding have led to hunger.

LOHADA working harder as food gets scarcer

The work of LOHADA has never been more critical. Throughout the winter, the Shinyanga region, home to many LOHADA children, faced hunger as drought conditions became dire. Northern Tanzania did not receive the ample rains farmers depend upon; a worm blight devastated the few plants that survived. Then, in mid-April, much of the country was pummeled with rains and flooding.

Before the floods, people in Shinyanga had been scavenging wild plants to eat. Now the situation is exacerbated.

In Arusha, heavy rains have wiped out many homes, contaminated drinking water and killed several people. The danger of a cholera epidemic is high. LOHADA is combatting the effects of the disaster. In the rural area outside of Shinyanga, a preschool for very young children provides rice and beans, often the only food children receive that day. In Arusha, LOHADA's schools and children are safe, but their extended families in the slums are at risk.

Please pray for people of Tanzania, and for LOHADA to be able to help meet their needs.

Drought and flood relief
Drought forced people in Shinyanga to walk long distances for water.
Camp Moses has a new look

Volunteers who remember the dirt yard where children played might be surprised about our improvements at Camp Moses School for Young Children. LOHADA thanks Mike and Georgia Dewhirst, who helped arrange donations for driveway paving and landscaping in the children's play area.
Camp Joshua is now wired and electrified!

LOHADA extends its undying gratitude to Rylan Wheeler, of Penticton, Canada, for making Camp Joshua's dream for electricity come true. Rylan first came to LOHADA with Penticton Secondary School in 2017. He loved us so much that he returned home and raised funds to wire Camp Joshua for electricity. He returned in February and watched as electrical workers installed the wiring in four of the school's classrooms, library and kitchen, pictured here. The children's dorms still use solar power. A primary reason for the electrification is the computer lab we hope to open for our students. Having electricity will allow our students to better study after dark and open the world of computers to them. Thank you, Rylan!
KIDS HELPING KIDS

The youth at Chapel Hill Freewill Baptist Church have put their faith into action. They decided to collect among themselves the $38 per month it costs to feed, educate and clothe Samwel, who is a very happy boy. We are delighted to see kids making a tangible difference in his life and the others at Camp Joshua School. Do you know a youth group looking for a way to give back? Send them to lohada.org.
Our special thanks

The children at LOHADA have had their lives transformed because of your generosity. Our thanks to:
• Ken Vandermark, who generously donated funds for paper and notebooks for our schools at Camp Joshua, Camp Moses and in Shinyanga. This is one of our biggest expenses but ensures that our children are on track in their education.
• Bay Hope Church, which faithfully pays more than 20 percent of our expenses, including salaries and food costs.
• All of our sponsors. Your generosity is making a difference because it's feeding children, providing them an education and giving hope where there was none. God bless you all.

THESE BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN NEED SPONSORS

Nearly 150 LOHADA children are without sponsors. Sponsoring a child at the Silver Level, $38 a month, or at the Gold Level, $50 a month, changes lives like Isack's and Helen's. It's easy to set up, and 100 percent of your donation goes directly to the care and education of children in need. Click the link below for more information.
Helen is a day-schooler at Camp Joshua. She works hard but struggles because of an eye injury when she was younger, which makes it difficult to read. Sponsoring Helen will help us give her the extra support she needs.
Isack, like many children at LOHADA, has a mother who is HIV-positive. Because of her compromised health and the stigma attached to her disease, Isack faced isolation in the slums. LOHADA has given him a second chance.
