Spice Notes : World Spice Merchants

Join us in June as the World Spice Cookbook Club explores the rich and diverse culinary traditions of Turkey with Istanbul & Beyond. Journalist Robyn Eckhardt and her husband, photographer David Hagerman, have spent almost twenty years discovering the country's very best dishes. Now they take readers on an unforgettable and delicious epicurean adventure, beginning in Istanbul, then journeying to the lesser-know provinces, opening up a vivid world of flavors influenced by neighboring Syria, Iran, Iraq, Armenia, and Georgia. Istanbul & Beyond takes recipes from village home cooks, community bakers, farmers, café chefs, and fishermen, covering basic staples such as Everyday Pickles and Garlicky Yogurt to such favorites as Spicy Meat-Filled Bulgur Dumplings with Tomato & Mint Sauce, as well as Savory Coiled Fennel & Nigella Buns and Oven Caramelized Pumpkin with Tahini & Yogurt. It's a gorgeous cookbook, one that you'll want to cook from again and again. We cannot wait for this "Meet & Eat"!
We had a little glitch with our email. If you RSVP'd to the last newsletter with a dish for next week's Meet & Eat, would you please resend that RSVP so that we can update the list? We didn't get it...Thank you!

We're definitely looking forward to July's Cookbook Club selection! Street food is a huge and important part of India’s food culture. Chai, Chaat & Chutney features some of the author's favorite street foods from the four corners of India. Author Chetna Makan was born in Central India, moving to the UK in 2003. Some will recognize her name from The Great British Bake Off in 2014, where she was a semi-finalist, or her gorgeous first cookbook, The Cardamom Trail, which celebrated baking with Indian flavors. For her second cookbook, she went back home to India to take inspiration from the street. This gorgeous cookbook has five chapters, one for each of  the cities that inspired the recipes, as well as an entire chapter devoted to various chutneys and masalas that will enhance any dish.

If you love Indian food, but have never tried cooking it at home before, this is an excellent introduction. The recipes are designed with the home cook in mind, with vibrant photographs that will make your stomach growl, as well as stories and explanations of the subtle differences in each area and each dish. Can you tell how much we're longing for July?
