Horseshoe Crabs and Medicine
The Atlantic Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus) lives on the ocean floor near the shore. When it mates, it swims into shallow water and often comes onto the beach. The crab is not edible, however, its baby blue blood is vital to the medical profession.
Horseshoe crabs, which are actually more related to spiders and other arachnids, have copper-based blood that contains an extract called lysate.
The extract reacts when exposed to bacterial contamination, so it's used to test the purity of medicines, medical devices, and surgical implants.

Finally, check out the mini display at the Golden Isles Library, and the book, The Narrow Edge, which tells the story of the ancient crab and the Red Knot birds that depend on it for survival.
