GOL!-LCSD
6 days. 11 adventurous students. 2 intrepid instructors. 1 incredible wilderness experience! Wilderness Experience LCHS students enjoyed a memorable and meaningful trip in Cedar Mesa, Utah applying all they learned this semester on outdoor leadership, backcountry safety, navigation, and trip management.
Thanks to all at Colorado Mountain College who have made this course so successful this year, especially instructor Cooper Mallozzi and trip co-leader Jenny Delcher.
Hands On STEM learning with GARNA
May was Perfect for Outdoor Learning Experiences in Lake County! Molly Hokkanen, our LCSD’s 7th/8th STEM teacher in Lake County School District, has embraced hands-on, outdoor fieldwork experiences throughout the school year in partnership with Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA). This is another example of the way that Get Outdoors Leadville! is collaborating with our schools to provide opportunities for students to learn beyond walls in the great outdoors. On May 15th, 130 7th and 8th grade students visited Hayden Meadows to review for their final science exam. They tested the chemical composition of water, identified factors affecting weather, and found indicator species for healthy streams. Many students had the chance to wade through the headwaters of the Arkansas to collect the data used in their final exam.
National Kids to Parks Day
Also on the 15th, Lake County 2nd graders celebrated national Kids to Parks Day in the most fitting & awesome way this week: by getting kids to parks!
Mrs. Lovely and her 2nd grade class were winners of the National Park Trust’s Kids to Parks Day contest. They ventured down to Great Sand Dunes National Park for a day of exploring the dunes, learning from local rangers, splashing in Medano Creek, and caring for the park by helping pick up trash!
Fish Hatchery Expedition!
On the 16th, West Park Elementary kindergartners headed to the Leadville National Fish Hatchery to spend time with Andrea Kurth of the Leadville Ranger District.
This outing was part of Get Outdoors Leadville!'s work with our school district to add outdoor fieldwork to a Learning Expedition all about trees.
You better bet that our Kindergartners can tell the difference between a "friendly" Fir and a pokey (Lodgepole) "Pine." And, of course, they know our main deciduous species, the quaking Aspen too! Kudos to Derek Lindquist for his hard work in making this experience happen for the Kindergartners.
CPW's Partners In the Outdoors Conference
GOL! was invited to represent Lake County at Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s annual Partners in the Outdoors Conference May 9th-11th.
Healthy Kids Director Cisco Tharp and youth researcher Sam Frykholm facilitated a session with GOCO on youth leadership in the Inspire Initiative work. Brayhan Reveles, who has supported GOL! as a youth researcher, bike leader, and coalition champion, presented on diversifying & deepening the conservation and recreation community in Colorado. It was a great gathering of passionate outdoor leaders and GOL! was honored to be a part of it!
