Way to Go, Randy!

Randy started math tutoring for his GED in December. He and his tutor worked on fractions, decimals and percentages. This past spring, Randy applied for a job at Morse Steel and needed to pass the math employment test to be hired. He said that that he would never have passed it if he had not done math tutoring with Whatcom Literacy Council.

Randy has been in his new job for a couple of months now.

“I’m making good money,” he said. “And I’m able to put money in savings to buy a house.”

Randy's goal is to take the GED exam at the end of the year, and then look at possibly enrolling in a program at BTC or Whatcom Community College.
Our Library is Expanding Thanks to the National Book Fund Award

We are happy to announce that we are the recipients of a National Book Fund award!  The National Book Fund was established by the national organization, ProLiteracy, in order to make materials available to adult literacy and adult basic education programs who couldn’t afford them. We are members of ProLiteracy and many of the materials that we routinely recommend to tutors come from their publisher, New Reader’s Press. In April, we submitted an application to supplement our library.  We applied for about $1500 worth of new books, focusing on the books our library was missing or we frequently ran out of. This includes citizenship prep, low-level reading literacy and moving to the newest editions of the Voyager and Endeavor series. In early June, we were notified that our application was approved, and the books arrived just a week later!  We’ve been enjoying the new titles,
and look forward to sharing them with learners and tutors. Thank you to the National Book Fund for this generous award!
Come Check Out What's New
at the Whatcom Literacy Council's Library!

Thanks to the National Book Fund, we have added a lot of exciting new materials in the
office library, including some great new Voyageur and Endeavor books! The reading
and writing for adults updated series
is designed to draw out the learner’s prior knowledge and relate to a learner’s life experiences. For example, in Endeavor 3, lesson one looks at Good Sleep for Good Health. The article talks about ways to get a good night’s sleep and reduce insomnia. The teacher’s guide provides strategies and tips for teaching vocabulary and building fluency, including activities to expand the learner’s understanding through questions and discussions.
You’ll find lots of practical, useful vocabulary in every lesson. It’s easy to adapt lessons and activities to suit the individual needs of your learner. We have a few copies at different levels from low beginning to advanced.  Contact us to find a time to come in and take a look!

Whatcom Literacy Council Annual Report Card for 2017

Last year our goal was to deepen the impact of our free adult literacy programs. Working with over 100 volunteers we served 959 learners through our tutoring and small group classes, bringing neighbors together to help neighbors, creating social capital and a healthier community. We placed volunteers in classes at BTC, WCC, and Goodwill, and taught sessions at schools, churches, farms, and libraries. We partnered with businesses and other nonprofits as we set individuals on a course for good jobs with better wages. As always, the gifts given by our donors stayed right here in Whatcom County, addressing local needs.

Tutor Reports

This is just a friendly reminder to all tutors that we need to receive a report from you each month to keep us up to date on how things are going with your learner. See the links below:

Adult Education Makes a Difference
Adults who aren’t proficient in English or have a high school education or less are at least two times more likely to be unemployed, three times more likely to be in poverty, four times more likely to be in poor health, and eight times more likely to be incarcerated, according to the Coalition on Adult Basic Education, a national advocacy group.

Celebrating Our Tutors

On June 7th, we celebrated a great year end with a tutor picnic.  We crossed our fingers for good weather, and were thrilled to have a lovely afternoon to share with many of our volunteer tutors. We raffled off a few thank you gifts, socialized, shared delicious food, and had a chance to connect with fellow members of the Whatcom Literacy Council community. Thank you to all the tutors who attended – we look forward to seeing all of you again, and more, in the fall!

Summer is here! If you are a 1-to-1 tutor, now is a good time to check in with your learner about summer meetings. Will you need to take time off? Will you need to meet in a new location? Will the learner have childcare needs? Let your coordinator know if you need help.

The Whatcom Literacy Council staff hours are reduced from mid-June until late August, so please call or email before stopping by the office to ensure that someone will be there to greet you! The office main
line is: 360-752-8678.

This is also a great time of year to look though the books and other loaned materials from the Whatcom Literacy Council library and return what is not being used. You can drop materials in the drop box outside of our office if it is closed.

Thank you and enjoy your summer!
Wrapping Up at Curt Mayberry Farms

In mid-June our class at Curt Maberry Farm wrapped up for the year.  It was a great experience to collaborate with Curt Mayberry Farms to offer English classes to their employees.  Our last half of class focused on phrases and vocabulary that would be useful to employees during the busy harvest season, and students were appreciative for the opportunity to learn new skills.  On the last day of class, they surprised the teacher with two buckets of strawberries that several students had picked that morning before class!  Thank you to all our students, and to Curt Maberry Farms for providing this opportunity for their employees.

If you have a resource or activity that you would like to recommend to other tutors, please share!
