Summer 2018

What's happening at LV?

Summertime and Safety
Summertime is almost here – why not get outside and enjoy? Part of our mission is to make our watershed available to you. Whether you’re looking to catch a fish, climb some hills, relax on a boat, or see wildlife, there’s no better time to visit the Los Vaqueros Watershed.

While you’re out, remember to stay hydrated and stay safe! Natural hazards exist in the Los Vaqueros Watershed, and the summer weather is inviting rattlesnakes out more and a recent study predicted that this may be a high tick year. For your safety, never hike, bike, or jog alone.
Steve Goodall, a local photographer, came across this rattlesnake while hiking.
Rattlesnakes
They tend to be most active from late winter through mid-autumn, but can be found all year. Rattlesnakes may strike if startled or harassed. Rattlesnakes tend to occupy areas with rocks, boulders, downed logs and ledges. If you see one, keep a safe distance and allow the snake to escape.
Our Watershed Staff are trained and prepared to assist with rattlesnakes.
Notify them if you need assistance.
Ticks
They can be plentiful in grassy and brushy areas. A recent study predicts a rise in ticks this season, so check yourself for ticks after visiting the watershed. Read the article here.
Reminder about Trail Closures
Thank you for your patience during this time of year as some of our trails are still temporarily closed to the public to protect nesting golden eagles. See below for the map and list of the temporarily closed trails:
