Announcement:
Introducing a New Series of Monthly Reflections

We plan to offer reflections on a monthly basis. These reflections will be made available by the CMF Board Members who represent their respective faith groups. The theme of the month may be an event, a ritual, a reading from scripture, etc.

          Faith-based Reflections,
Series One: Hajj (The Islamic Pilgrimage)

On August 21, 2018, approximately 2 to 3 million Muslims will travel to Saudi Arabia for performing Pilgrimage called Hajj. Hajj is one of the five fundamentals of Islam. It can be performed once in a life time, only if you are healthy and financially able to undertake the journey. Hajj is performed in the last month of Islamic lunar Calendar from dates 8-13.

Muslims travel to the city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia, where Kaaba in the center of the Masjid al-Haram (the Grand Mosque) is located. This Grand Mosque was built by Prophet Abraham and his son Prophet Ishmael by God's command. Most of the rituals that pilgrims perform is a commemoration of part of Abraham and his family's practices in their sojourn at the site.

Hajj lasts for five days, during which Pilgrims camp on the outskirts of Makkah and live in tents or open fields. On the 2nd day, they travel 9 km to another open space, called Arafat, and this is the actual day of Hajj. On this day they engage in prayers and listen to the Sermon. Then they leave before sunset to camp at another space 6 km on the return journey overnight and return to the first day's Camp.

Third day onward, they perform for three days a ritual of stoning the Satan/Devil. There are, three pillars erected, where Prophet Abraham, threw seven stones at three different pillars to Satan/Devil. Satan/Devil tried to influence his Son Ishmael in order to stop the attempted sacrifice. By stoning, pilgrims pledge to God that from now on they will always try to avoid being influenced by Satan/Devil, and pray that they are enabled to do so in their future life.

Next, on the third day, the pilgrims also slaughter an animal in memory of Prophet Abraham, who sacrificed a lamb in place of his Son by Divine command. Muslims around the World join these pilgrims in celebration of their Hajj and also commemorate the Sacrifice of Abraham with slaughtering an animal and distribute the meat to the poor.

At the end of five days they return to the City to perform the last act, i.e., circumambulation and complete the Hajj.

From a practical point of view, it is living miracle, that over 3 to 4 million people combined with locals and supporting staff, stay for 3 to four weeks, and never run out of food and water. Besides moving that many people within a day to two separate places, one place from morning to afternoon, and then to another to overnight stay is a miracle in itself.
