The Round Top Fourth of July Parade

Wednesday July 4: 10:30 AM
Round Top, Texas

The Round Top community has celebrated the Fourth of July every year since 1851. In fact, it's known as the longest running Fourth of July celebration west of the Mississippi.  The rest of the year, Round Top boasts an impressive population of 90 souls, many of German origin.  But on the Fourth of July, neighbors from Houston, Austin, San Antonio and everywhere in between travel into Round Top for a taste of an old-time, small-town Fourth.

The civil war-era cannon roars at 10:30, announcing the parade of handmade floats, antique cars and tractors, fire engines, trail riders and longhorn cattle.  The parade circles Round Top square to the enthusiastic strains of Round Top's own Brass Band.  Children dart out for candy and trinkets while families and neighbors visit on the town square. Learn more here.

Exceptional History Just Down the Road

From the Backroads Blog on visitfayettecounty.com
Amid the old oak and pecan trees, winding country roads and acres of rolling farmland you’ll find World War II relics, houses with rich histories and depictions of daily life from another era in and around the towns of Fayette County, TX.

You’re invited to take a step back in time as we continue where we left off in our May blog on museums. Here’s the lowdown on what La Grange, Round Top, Burton, Carmine, Fayetteville and Serbin, TX (yes, Serbin!) have to offer.

Charming Carmine, basketballs and antiques.

The Carmine Chamber of Commerce Museum at 248 Sylvan St. in the tiny town of Carmine, TXdraws on all the history of the town, dating back to 1883. A unique display portrays items from each era. It’s open on the 2nd and 4th Friday and Saturday of the month from 10:00 – 2:00. When you’re planning on visiting The Texas Basketball Museum in Carmine, give Robert the heads up. It’s by appointment only. The museum features thousands of items, from Texas high schools to national team memorabilia. Call 713.898.7667. Then check out the wonderful JW’s Steakhouseacross the street. We’ve mentioned their great wine list.

And while in Carmine, you might stop and shop at the Carmine Trading Post, one of our newest members of the Fayette County Tourism Association! Choose from a huge selection of antiques, but they are only open Thursday through Sunday, starting at 11:00. There’s more to see and do around town so you could make a weekend of it. You’re always welcome!

Thank you Ima Hogg, cotton, a museum campus and fabulous Fayetteville.

The Texas Cotton Gin Museum in Burton, TX is home to the oldest operating cotton gin in America. They are open several days a week but it’s always a good idea to call before going. The historical Burton Railroad Depot at 507 N. Railroad St. is only open by appointment. Message them from their FB page for more information.

Just down the road from Burton and downtown Round Top is the wonderful Winedale Historical Complex located at 3738 F.M. 2714. Ima Hogg donated the 225-acre campus to the University of Texas and her philanthropy gave birth to numerous programs supporting education and the arts.

The Round Top Area Historical Society houses a “museum campus” that’s open every second Saturday of the month from 12:00 – 3:00. Take your time to enjoy this very special place in one of the most visited towns in Fayette County.

The Fayetteville Area Heritage Museum is located in the historic town square in Fayetteville, about 20 minutes from Round Top. Call or email several days before you go to make sure they’re open.  Everything Czech, saddles, noodles and quilts.

La Grange is only about 25 minutes from Round Top. The complex at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center at 250 W. You’ll find the La Grange Railroad Museum (The M-K-T Railroad Depot) at the intersection of North Washington and Lafayette. Historic photographs, the original potbelly stove and hands-on exhibits are just a few of the delights. It’s only open on Saturdays.

The Texas Quilt Museum showcases quilts that are true works of art. Two historic, late 19th century buildings house the antique and contemporary quilts that cultivate admirers and collectors from all over the world. The museum is part of the Square in La Grange where a lot goes on, so you’re welcome to eat, drink, shop and stay.

The Wends are an ethnic group descended from a small, Slavic tribe. Their rich culture is honored in a museum complex housing three buildings, two log cabins built around 1860 and a library. The Texas Wendish Heritage Museum on 1011 County Road 212 in Serbin, TX is a pretty, scenic drive from La Grange. And just try to resist the bags of handmade Wendish noodles!
