This Weekend

Special Offering this Weekend

This Sunday June 17 is Campus Ministry at St. Mark's.  Funds collected through this special offering support on-site ministries (ministers and programming) at colleges/universities throughout the California Pacific Annual Conference (like SDSU & UCSD), providing spaces for students to grow spiritually and engage in activities to meet their holistic needs.  Please support as you are able this program that spiritually supports our young adults who may be away from their families and church homes for the first time.

Pastor’s Sunday School

In Pastor’s Sunday School we study the lectionary texts which follow the church calendar.
It’s an informal study, always open to all, at 8:30AM in the New Room, just behind the church office.
Below are the lectionary readings for this week:
  • 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13
  • Psalm 20
  • 2 Corinthians 5:6-10
  • Mark 4:26-34

9-week Book Study Starting July 1

What would it mean to engage in responsible contemporary theological activity that is also authentically Wesleyan? What would be the potential benefit of doing so? pursuit of these questions led Rev. Dr. Randy L. Maddox to write Responsible Grace, John Wesley’s Practical Theology. Rev. Dr. Maddox is currently the institute secretary of the Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies and Professor of Wesleyan and Methodist Studies at Duke Divinity School.

Rev. Jeri will lead a 9-week book study beginning on Sunday, July 1, from 4 – 5:30 PM at St. Mark’s, in the New Room. Light refreshments will be served. Everyone is invited, no matter how new or seasoned you are in Methodist doctrine. Together, let’s journey and learn John Wesley’s practical theology.
Sign-up in the office. Books can be ordered on-line or purchased through St. Mark’s for $28.

St. Mark’s Annual Yard Sale

St. Mark’s Yard Sale Committee is planning the Annual Yard Sale and hopes that you have too!

Please start planning what you would like to contribute to the sale as well as when you would like to volunteer to help during the sorting/pricing work times: Saturday July 28 and July 30 - August 2 and sale day August 3 - 4.

You might think that the yard sale sounds like a lot of work - and it is! But it’s a lot of fun, too! And remember, if you help get ready for the sale, you get to shop early!

The yard sale is also a great outreach to the community!

Bible Giants Need You
by Karen Scanlon

You're not too old, too decrepit, too healthy, or too busy, too slow, or too fast. We need an assortment of volunteers to help us in prep and execution of Vacation Bible School ahead of and during the week of August 20 - 24. This is a community adventure and we hope you'll be with us, too. Go back to your own childhood, did you attend Vacation Bible School or some such?

I've been reading and rereading a book Rev. Jeri gave me titled Being United Methodist: What it means and why it matters. I keep it as close to me as my Bible. In short, author J. Ellsworth Kalas says that we must remain close to our Methodist roots. And I can think of many roots to tend, certainly you can, too. Vacation Bible School is one of them--giving our children the experiences of the Bible.

We need you for a few hours, a single job in prep, or attending one (or more) of our two-and-a-half hour sessions in August. Please let us know how you'll help, won't you? This is living our United Methodist faith.

Please call or email:

Boxes Needed for the Wall of Jericho

If we are to build a massive wall around Jericho at this summer's Vacation Bible School, we need all the boxes you encounter, please. All sizes and shapes.
Please hang on to them until after the yard sale on August 4, or we'll come and pick them up from you.
Questions? Karen Scanlon at kws-canlon@gmail.com or phone 858 583-4992. Thanks, everybody!

Summer Camp at Cedar Glen Still Time to Register

An incredibly fun, transformative and fulfilling experience, youth summer camps are registering youth for their summer programs.. Four different camps for younger elementary, older elementary, middle school and high school students are available in June and July of this year at Camp Cedar Glen. A beautiful place in Julian full of green trees and where there are more stars than open sky at night. Learn more and sign up your youth at campcedarglen.org. Camp costs $445 for the three older groups. Scholarships (camperships) are available through the conference on the registration form and through St. Mark's so don't let cost prevent you from experiencing the joy of camp!
