Safety Rocks Summer Newsletter
We collaborate with Safety Net to on their newsletter for parents of primary school aged pupils, offering advice and information on how to keep children safe in Brighton & Hove. The Summer 2018 newsletter will be distributed by schools next week and contains advice from Child Safety Week on preventing accidents, as well as hints and tips on moving up to secondary school and dealing with change, and information for parents on Fortnight and age-restrictions on using social media. There is also an electronic secondary school version that offers parents of older children tips to help manage exam stress and anxiety, information on the worrying use of Xanax as a recreational drug, and signs that a young person may be caught up in "County Lines". Read the full newsletter here.

Thursday 28 June 2018: full day
Working with Parents who have a Learning Disability
This workshop will raise awareness of how multi-agency work can help address issues that may cause potential risk or harm to the children cared for by parents with a learning disability. It will look at best practice when working with these families and the local support available
At the end of this course participants will:
- have a better understanding of cognitive assessments and understanding differences between a learning disability and difficulty.
- be aware of the challenges faced by parents with learning disabilities and their children, as well as protective factors.
- be able to demonstrate good practice when engaging and communicating with parents who have a learning disability, including advocacy services.
- know referral pathways to specialist services and interventions (including PAMS) that can support parents and their children.
- Understand what is required when working with families in a child in need and child protection context.

The Impact of Parental Substance Misuse
Some of the serious effects of parental substance misuse for children include abuse, neglect, emotional problems, educational difficulties, being young carers of parents or siblings, and a potential to later use drugs or alcohol themselves. This course highlights the issues facing children and young people who live within the households where substance misuse is an issue. You will learn about what agency services are available to support the whole family, thus reducing or removing the potential risk/s of abuse.

Domestic Violence and Abuse: the Impact on Children and Young People
This training deals with the aspects of emotional harm, physical risk and neglect often associated with domestic abuse. It will help you to develop an understanding of the issues faced by families in this situation, the impact of this kind of abuse, and will also signpost you to local multi-agency support available to intervene and thus reduce the risk to those impacted. The session is presented by Rise who have provided support for victims of domestic abuse in Brighton & Hove for over 20 years.
At the end of this course participants will be able to:
- increase the knowledge base regarding the impact of domestic violence/abuse on children and young people
- gain a greater understanding of the specific issues families face where domestic abuse is occurring
- widen knowledge and understanding of the role that interagency developments and interventions can have in reducing the risks
- increase opportunities to access and work effectively with other agency partners.

Introduction to Harmful Practices: Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Forced Marriage and so-called 'Honour' Based Violence
This workshop is presented by Safe in the City and explores the definitions and practices associated with female genital mutilation (FGM), forced marriage and so-called 'honour' based violence, and places them within the wider context of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG).This session will focus on the communities in which these practices commonly take place, and the procedures if a disclosure or the risk of a harmful practice is presented.
At the end of the workshop participants will:
- demonstrate a clear understanding of different harmful practices.
- identify risk factors that can render women and girls vulnerable to harmful practices
- identify the signs that a women or girl is at risk of, or experiencing, harmful practice(s)
- describe the legislative and policy frameworks that exist for the prevention of harmful practices, the safeguarding of women and girls and the prosecution of perpetrators
- understand that while harmful practices can have a disproportionate impact on some groups, they are a form of VAWG, and are interconnected with other forms of domestic and sexual violence and abuse, and are likely to co-exist within the same family environment

Working with Young People at Risk of Exploitation
This course explores ways of working directly with young people around exploitation in more detail and encourages familiarisation with the resources available. There is also an enhanced focus on online safety and police disruption techniques as well as an outline of the local picture of exploitation with reference to recommendations from national serious case reviews around CSE.

The Child's World: Reflections in Practice
This training will help those professionals who talk to children and young people during the course of an assessment or child protection investigation develop and enhance their communication skills, centred on the views of the child or young person.
The session will involve a young care leaver discussing how different kinds of communication impacted on their interaction with safeguarding professionals

Brighton & Hove and East Sussex Domestic Violence and Abuse, Sexual Violence and Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy Consultation
The Safe in the City Partnership are calling for professionals to help shape a joint approach to tackle domestic and sexual violence and abuse, as well as other forms of violence against women and children.
East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council are working together to ensure the right services are available to reduce the risk of domestic and sexual violence and abuse, and support victims and survivors.
The two authorities want to develop a joint strategy to improve the response to domestic abuse, stalking and harassment, sexual violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, crimes committed in the name of “honour” and sexual exploitation.
National charity AVA has been commissioned to conduct the independent consultation.
The consultation is open to any professional who lives, works or travels to Brighton & Hove and East Sussex.
