They chatted with Pauline Stanford, Co-ordinator of the Distance Education and Information Unit of National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD), for about 15 minutes about the importance of children's first language in their learning and all-round development.

CONSULTATION/ GLU members recently attended a two-day consultation on writing problems at the tertiary level. During discussions, Charlene Wilkinson spoke briefly on the undeniable convergence of social rights and language policy, which would need to be addressed if solutions are to be sustainable. The GLU recognises that although the consultation identified writing as the problem, what manifests as a writing problem (because writing is visible) is actually a language issue – and one that needs to be at the centre of our discussions going forward. The GLU wishes to applaud Deputy Vice Chancellor Michael Scott and his team on this very important consultation, and to assure the UG administration of our support in the crafting of solutions.

FEEDBACK/ We were delighted to receive the following message of support from the Pro-Chancellor of UG regarding the GLU's upcoming Creolese writing course: "Dear Colleagues of the GLU. Thank you for sharing with me the information relating to this laudable initiative. I express the hope that the participants of the new course, Introduction to Writing in Creolese, to be conducted at the Turkeyen and Tain Campuses, will find it of great value. Such value-added expertise will facilitate better contextual communication and interpretation in the process of transferring knowledge and promoting good interaction between teachers and students and especially those from rural communities.
Warmest regards
Pro-Chancellor
