CHUMASH

Rishon with Rashi

Korach was jealous that Moshe Rabbeinu chose someone else to be the Nasi of his Shevet. He started convincing Yidden that there should be no leader — everyone should be special! Moshe tried to stop the machlokes.

Moshe’s cousin, Korach, was very upset. Moshe Rabbeinu chose Elitzafan ben Uziel as the Nasi of his Shevet. Korach thought that HE deserved to be the Nasi!

(Uziel was the youngest brother of Amram, Moshe Rabbeinu’s father. Korach’s father, Yitzhar, was the oldest brother after Amram. He felt that he should have been the next choice for a leader. Korach didn’t know that HASHEM told Moshe to pick someone else.)

Korach said that it wasn’t fair that Moshe and Aharon should be in charge of the Yidden — ALL of the Yidden are special, so nobody should be in charge! Nobody should get to be kohanim and be more special.

Korach convinced his sons, his neighbors Dasan and Aviram, and his neighbors from Shevet Reuven — the sons of Eliav, and On ben Peles — to join him.

They gathered together 250 Yidden, including many important people (like the Nesiim and the judges) to go against Moshe. They asked Moshe a question to show that nobody should be more special:

“If we wear a robe made ALL out of Techeiles, do we need to put Tzitzis (with a techeiles string) on it?”

When Moshe answered yes, they laughed at him and said that it doesn’t make sense! If the WHOLE robe is made of Techeiles, why does it need one more techeiles string?

They were trying to tell Moshe that ALL of the Yidden are special (like techeiles) and they don’t need one string to be separate (like Moshe and Aharon) to be in charge of them! They said, “ALL of the Yidden are holy! Why do you try to be more important than everyone else?”

Moshe was afraid that all of the Yidden would join them, and that Hashem would punish ALL of the Yidden! Hashem told Moshe that only Korach and the people that join him would be punished.

Moshe told Korach to wait until the next day (so he had a chance to do Teshuvah).

Then, the next day, Korach can bring Ketores to see if Hashem wants EVERYONE to be the Kohen Gadol. The ketores is more special than all of the other korbanos, but it could be dangerous, like we saw with Nadav and Avihu. Moshe Rabbeinu said that this would be a good way to see what Hashem really wants.

Moshe tried to make Korach feel better, by telling him how special it is to be a Levi and sing in the Mishkan. He reminded Korach that it was HASHEM Who decided who should be the Kohen Gadol! So they aren’t just going against Moshe — they are going against HASHEM!

Moshe wanted to make Dasan and Aviram feel better too, but they didn’t want to talk to Moshe.

Instead, they said, “You were supposed to bring us into Eretz Yisroel, and instead you want to kill us in the desert — you want to be in charge of us!”

TEHILLIM

120 - 134

Today’s Tehillim are the 15 Shir Hamaalos.

The Rebbe Maharash once said that if someone doesn’t have parnasa, it’s not really the parnasa that is missing, it’s the bitachon in Hashem that is missing!

A Chossid once complained to the Rebbe Maharash about how hard it is for him at home, because he has no money. He said (from today’s Tehillim), “MeiAyin Yavo Ezri?” “Where will my help come from?”

The Rebbe Maharash answered, “Your answer is in the next posuk! ‘Ezri Me’Im Hashem, Osei Shomayim VaAretz!’ Your help comes from Hashem, Who takes care of everything in the Shomayim and the earth. He gives everything what it needs in the right time, and He will take care of you too!”

TANYA

Shaar Hayichud Veha'emunah Perek Ches

In the first half of Shaar Hayichud Veha’emunah, the Alter Rebbe explained the posuk Veyadaata Hayom, where Moshe Rabbeinu tells the Yidden that they should know (Veyadaata) that Hashem Hu Ha’elokim, and Ein Od Milvado — there is nothing aside for Hashem. The Alter Rebbe helped us to be able to look at the world where Hashem is hidden and still KNOW that there is nothing aside for Hashem. Now we are learning what the Rambam says is impossible for a person to properly understand — about Achdus Hashem (Hu Vedaato Echad). This we will have to take with Emunah.

We are learning that we have no mashal to understand Achdus Hashem, how Hashem is one with all of the sefiros. Why not? Because any mashal we have is from the way things are with US, and that’s NOT the way they are with Hashem!

Today the Alter Rebbe reviews the levels we have in our neshama. But we will see that even the highest koach of our neshama which we can imagine is too low to be even used as a mashal for Hashem at all!

There are five levels in how the neshama expresses itself. From highest to lowest:

1) Chochmah: (knowing) like knowing about someone who needs help

2) Midos: (feeling) like feeling Rachmonus for the person

3) Machshava: (thinking) like thinking about how to help him

4) Dibur: (talking) like talking to someone about a plan for what to do

5) Maaseh: (doing) like giving the person what he needs

Even Chochmah is only the highest level in the way Hashem created things, and it really isn’t a mashal for Hashem Himself at all!

HAYOM YOM

Chof-Zayin Sivan

Today we learn something very important about how we get good parnasa.

Hashem has a plan for how much money a person should get for a whole year. The way to get these things is through Hashem’s bracha.

How do we get Hashem’s bracha? By doing our business the way Hashem wants. For example, we aren’t allowed to sell something so we will earn more money than the Torah allows us to — Ona’ah. When we act the way the Torah tells us, we get a DOUBLE bracha!

1) We get enough money for everything we need

2) We will be able to use our money for GOOD things, not things like doctor bills or lawyers, chas veshalom!

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Mitzvas Asei #236

Today’s mitzvah (Mitzvas Asei #236) is the same as yesterday’s: that if a person makes someone else get hurt, he needs to pay him to make up for what he did.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Mishpatim: וְכִי יְרִיבֻן אֲנָשִׁים וְהִכָּה אִישׁ אֶת רֵעֵהוּ

The details of this mitzvah are explained in Perek Ches of Mesechta Bava Kama.

RAMBAM

Hilchos Chovel U'Mazik

In today’s Rambam, we learn two perakim about the halachos of someone who hurt another person, and we start learning the halachos about someone who damaged someone else’s possessions.

Perek Daled talks about kinds of people that have different halachos if they got hurt — like a Mommy who had a baby inside, or if someone hurts their parents, or if a servant was hurt. The halachos of what needs to be paid can be different for each kind of person.

Perek Hey teaches us that it is asur to even pick up your hand against another Yid. Someone who does is called a rasha, even if he didn’t hurt him! We also learn that a person should be mochel the person who hurt him if he asks for forgiveness.

Perek Vov starts the halachos about damaging someone else’s THINGS (not about hurting the person, like we were learning before).

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos Sotah - Perek Beis

In this perek, we learn which women drink the bitter Sotah waters, and which women don’t.

DARKEI HACHASSIDUS

Hachana L'Gimmel Tammuz

The Achdus of chassidim will bring the Geulah!

The Rebbe told this story:

The Tzemach Tzedek once had to go to Petersburg (the capital) for many meetings. The government wanted to make rules about the kind of Chinuch the Yidden can have!

The Tzemach Tzedek wouldn’t say yes EVER to making any change in pure Yiddishe chinuch, and they were very mad at him! It was very dangerous for the Tzemach Tzedek to act this way.

One of the Rabbonim who was there asked the Tzemach Tzedek how he could do this! There are so many Yidden who NEED the Tzemach Tzedek, so how can he do something which puts his life in danger? Without him, many Yidden won’t know how to live how a Yid should!

The Tzemach Tzedek said he needs to do what he is doing, and if something would happen to him chas veshalom, there are two other ways to help all of these Yidden know how to act:

1) The Tzemach Tzedek’s children can take over and teach and guide the chassidim.

2) The achdus of Chassidim will carry them until Moshiach.

The Rebbe told this story 100 years after the histalkus of the Tzemach Tzedek. He said, “Now the first reason isn’t there anymore — only the second. We need to know that when Chassidim work together, we have the koach to bring Moshiach!”

TEFILLAH

Kriyas Shema She'al Hamitah

At night, before we go to sleep, we say Kriyas Shema She’al Hamitah.

There are three main reasons why we say this Shema:

1) Shemirah (guarding): Nighttime is a time when the kelipah of the world is stronger. Saying Kriyas Shema helps protect us from the koach of kelipah.

2) Beyadcha Afkid Ruchi (I give my neshama into Your hands): At night, our neshama goes up to Hashem to receive new koach for the next day. Before returning our neshama, we ask Hashem to forgive us for our aveiros and make our day complete.

3) Hachana (preparation): The way we go to sleep changes the way we wake up the next day! By saying Kriyas Shema She’al Hamitah properly, we prepare to be able to connect to Hashem the next day in davening, and behaving the whole day the way we should.

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Kriyas Shema She'al Hamitah

Because of the special things that Kriyas Shema She’al Hamitah does, it is written in seforim that women should be careful to say AT LEAST the first paragraph, the line of Beyodcha, and Hamapil.

~

In answer to someone who said that he missed saying Kriyas Shema She’al Hamitah, the Rebbe told him to be careful not to miss it again, and to know the practical halachos about Kriyas Shema.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

Moshiach Will Be Our Leader Forever!

The Navi Yeshaya tells us that when Moshiach comes, he will stay our ruler forever! It was so sad for the Yidden when we went into Golus and no longer had a Yiddishe king, but that will never happen again.

Lo Yavo Od Shimsheich — Your sun will not set anymore

Veyereichech Lo Yei’asef — And your moon will not hide its light.

This is a mashal that teaches us that Moshiach will stay our king forever! Even though a sun usually sets, and in the past we went into Golus and lost our kings, Moshiach’s rulership will never end.

Ki Hashem Yihiyeh Lach Le’or Olam — Because Hashem will be your light forever

Veshalmu Yemei Evleich — And your days of sadness will end.

We will never again have the sadness of losing the Yiddishe kings, because Hashem will make sure that the Melucha of Moshiach lasts forever.
