Long read from Texas's 247 Sports outlet on the early work of Longhorns AD Del Conte, titled as "repairing the UT athletics' soul," which seems maybe a bit strong, but columnist Brown is a notable insider. Brown says one reason Del Conte took the job in Austin is a belief that the wrong leader for UT could spell eventual destruction of the Big 12. Brown also says former Prez Powers effectively fired former AD Dodds after "power brokers" wanted to go after Alabama HC Saban as the new gridiron boss to replace longtime HC Brown. Quite the start to the article. The piece continues with plenty of backstory on the role of PulsePoint Group in guiding former AD Patterson to the forefront of the search to replace Dodds, which was believed to have then-West Virginia AD Luck as the frontrunner. Turning toward the here & now, Brown indicates the contract of longtime leader & new Chief of Staff Plonsky "calls for her salary of $534,665 to be reduced by $90,000 if she's not over external services." In total, Brown describes Del Conte's work to date as reuniting a department that had been marked by in-fighting & a dip in morale. More. (link)
Conversely, the last eight years in Norman have featured a number of steps forward for Oklahoma & The Oklahoman's Tramel points directly to the work of AD Castiglione & former university Prez Boren. Good perspective from Boren, "I have a greater appreciation for athletics than I had when I came here. [...] Excellence in athletics and physical training, it leads to excellence in other things, too. I don’t think it’s a coincidence so many corporate CEOs I’ve known were varsity athletes. I think that’s a direct result (of) what you learn from athletics. The changes in the department since I’ve been here — I give Joe Castiglione the lion’s share of credit — have been inspiring to me. These kids, they’re involved in everything. They’ve been effective student leaders and helped build the spirit of community. I’m definitely more sympathetic to the role of athletics." Further, Boren says he's proud of the OU brand being known for its "standards, not its scandals" that were connected to the Sooners for a stretch from the 1950s through the 1980s. (link)
New Utah AD Harlan continues to be in the spotlight, this time with former boss & UCLA AD Guerrero commenting on why his former staffer has what it takes to succeed in the Pac-12, "He has the knack to communicate well with a broad spectrum of people, and to build real, meaningful relationships. He takes the time to fully understand the institution, learn its history and ask what matters most to is supporters." (link); The Deseret News's Rock notes the transient nature of college athletics as Harlan exited Tampa not long after receiving an extended contract at USF, "In defense of the free-market system, high-stakes college athletics is an uneasy place to work. Administrators voice support for coaches, yet fire them at the end of the same season. Coaches profess love for players and programs, then move elsewhere. Athletic officials sometimes take the fall for rogue programs. Newly hired coaches and administrators aren’t always lying when they rave about a place and its players. But they’re not always as committed as they say." (link)
One of the more interesting AD moves in recent memory was Incarnate Word AD Wickstrom's transition to an FCS program from FBS Louisiana Monroe. However, the Cardinals budget looks to be ~$6M more than the Warhawks & Wickstrom's fundraising touch has continued in San Antonio with UIW already improving its facilities portfolio & annual fund numbers increasing. Wickstrom is also credited with building trust with key university constituents, connecting athletics with greater campus, hiring solid HCs & leading the way on diversity & inclusion initiatives. New FB HC Morris: "To have what I see as a Power 5 president and a Power 5 athletic director to help generate the resources we need to get the program where it needs to go is exciting." A bit more. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
The mergers & acquisitions circling the media space right now kind of feels like conference realignment in college athletics. WSJ's Fritz outlines how Netflix is the change agent leading to the potential deals between AT&T & Time Warner - verdict coming this week - Disney/Comcast & Fox, CBS & Viacom, MGM & Lions Gate as well as Amazon & Apple pouring billions in the original content space. Endeavor noted as an agency that's trying to keep up, as well, with the creation of Endeavor Content to fuse its key talent with new projects. Veteran studio executive Berman: "The AT&T case is not just looming over Time Warner, but looming over the whole future of the media landscape." (link)

Louisiana officials met for the first time this week for what should be a 6-to-8-week feasibility study to determine what the renovations to Cajun Field should entail. AD Maggard's opinion: "I want the Cajun Field/sports park to be an entertainment destination for people — not necessarily just sporting events. So, as we plan and build — or renovate existing facilities — we’re doing it keeping mind that we need to be thinking of ways to utilize our facilities more than just six Saturdays out of the year, or whatever the case may be. So, there will be a lot of grander thinking involved as we develop these facilities. Are there ways to make them multi-use, to where we can use (them for) more than just on football games? Are there ways to generate revenue? All that discussion and thought will be a part of this feasibility study." Finances are the biggest unknown to date. (link); Here is a video recapping recent changes to Cajun Field and other facilities on campus. (link)
Check out Loyola-Chicago's groundbreaking for the new Alfie Norville Practice Facility that took place on Friday. Minute-plus video includes a bunch of renderings of the new digs. Prez Rooney says the namesake donors "have been models of reinforcing to the university and encouraging us to continue the balance between great athletics and great academics." (link)
UMBC MBB HC Odom's new deal bumps him up from a $225K base to $425K and comes with an additional $75K for school alumni, fundraising and media appearances. NCAA Tourney appearance gets a $25K bonus, NIT appearance is $22K, $20.5K for a lower-tier postseason tourney and $17.5K for making it to the America East Conference Tournament final. His buyout is now $225K. New deal went into effect April 1. (link)
The Hawaii Board of Regents voted unanimously this week to give the university president power to sign off on employment contracts of five years or less, so long as the annual salary doesn't exceed $500K. Hawaii MBB HC Ganot's contract got extended for five years, seven months ago. Men's VB HC Wade has a new deal through 2021 and AD Matlin says he is still working on a multi-year extension for Baseball HC Trapasso. Regents' Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics Chair Portnoy: "I don’t believe Regents should have a role in whether or not a coach gets a contract, how long the contract is or what the coach makes in that contract. I think you hold the people responsible for those decisions (president, chancellor or athletic director) accountable." (link)
More Personnel: USF's SB Nation's Bond tosses in a few more possibilities for the Bulls AD gig: EVP/COO of the International Speedway Corp Chitwood (MBA '95), Clemson Assoc. AD for Compliance Charles (B.S. '05), Northern Illinois AD Frazier and Under Armour's Dir. of College Sports Carparelli. (link); Some administrative salary figures at Youngstown State reviewed, including Penguins AD Strollo's $140K. (link); Southeastern Louisiana extends MBB HC Ladner through 2020-21. (link)
I hadn't seen this comment from Southland Commish Burnett on the new strategic scheduling moves by the Sun Belt & Conference USA, "Something that gets lost here is you have got to win your games. We're looking for answers for when we don't win our games. As a conference commissioner, I've been through this a number of years. We're looking for positives when we're losing our games. That's a big problem that some just can't overcome. If teams are going to lose games late, that's detrimental." (link)
Warchant.com's Schoffel: FSU is bringing the 'F' word back to college sports. He means "fun," of course. On chatter these past few days since Florida State's Softball team won the WCWS: "I wish I had been keeping an official tally. But if I had to guess, I'd say the ratio of references to 'fun' and 'smiles' outpaced the mentions of 'championship' and 'title' by about 5-to-1. ... I don't mean that to diminish what the softball team accomplished in any way. I think FSU fans would have loved Alameda's team under any circumstances. But I also think this group came along at just the right time for an athletics program that is still in the healing process. After watching FSU's football team grumble through the motions for the past two or three seasons, Seminole fans have been desperate to rekindle their love for the university." Schoffel believes 'Noles FB HC Taggart is taking a similarly "fun approach" to Softball HC Alameda. (link)
The News-Gazette's Tate is a proponent of bringing Ice Hockey to Illinois: "Varsity hockey here, bolstered by thousands of Chicago area students, would soon rocket into the UI's third-most-attended sport behind football and men's basketball." Points to money being the biggest hurdle and second to that AD Whitman needing to comply with Title IX. More Tate: "So, again, it's always about the money. And Whitman has been a whirlwind in that regard, most recently engaging in facility improvements for football, soccer and track, and with additions planned for baseball and softball, not to mention an upcoming Monday announcement on the Ubben basketball practice facility." Thinks the Illini would be a perfect fit in the Big Ten. (link)
Sports Illustrated's McCann breaks down the Ploetz v. NCAA case that's set to begin this week, which is the first CTE case to reach trial. Here's the real headline, "The trial will be a landmark event in the decade-long legal effort to hold football organizers responsible for long-term brain injuries suffered by participating players. If successful, the lawsuit could lead to significant changes for the sport and the NCAA." McCann covers the key legal arguments in lengthy fashion, as well as the NCAA's defense tactics. Key: "In some ways, Hardin-Ploetz’s lawsuit sounds just like hundreds of other concussion-related lawsuits filed by former football players over the last seven years. The difference is that while those cases led to settlements or dismissals, or remain in litigation, Hardin-Ploetz’s lawsuit is going to trial, barring a last-minute settlement. NCAA witnesses will be forced to answer questions under oath about player safety with jurors watching them. Also, the viability of key defense theories against the concussion lawsuit—including assumption of risk and lack of causation—will be tested for the first time." Lots more. (link)
