Roofs & Resources

We want to talk. A real community dialogue about houselessness and housing – speaking to both our experiences here in Montavilla as well the city-wide crisis we find ourselves in. For the panel, we've invited the currently and formerly houseless, local service providers, community advocates, and especially neighbors.

And the themes we will explore together were originally chosen by you, the Montavilla Neighborhood Association membership!

The format is designed to let us all feel heard: the panelists will tell their story with a brief Q&A from facilitators. Then it’s your turn to talk. At each of our tables, we’ll discuss as a group what we took from the panel, how it mixes with our lived experience or what we know, and what we plan to do about it. We hope to keep conversations cordial, compassionate and solutions-oriented. Each table will then have a chance to summarize their findings and ask the panelist a question.

This is a chance for us to discuss as a community how to take care of each other and the barriers that stand in the way of that. Please join us to add your voice.

MNA COMMITTEE MEETINGS

Land Use and Transportation Committee: We meet monthly on 4th Wednesdays. In June, we'll meet on Wednesday, June 27th, at 7-8:30 pm. Location: Portland Metro Arts, 9003 SE Stark St, Portland, OR 97216. Contact: Amanda Rhoads, Chair, at amanda@montavillapdx.org.

Ad-Hoc Bylaws Working Group: A volunteer group is reviewing our bylaws for compliance with recommendations from the Office of Community and Civic Life (formerly the Office of Neighborhood Involvement), and recommendations from our 2017 Elections Committee. We are working to present the edits for a membership vote prior to the October 2018 elections. Our next tentative meeting is Sunday, July 24th in the evening. PBOT Lowers Speed on Stark to 20 mph between SE 82nd and SE 76th

Montavilla neighborhood resident (and now MNA Land Use Committee member) Kate Walker took PBOT/PSU's Traffic and Transportation Course last fall and was inspired to take action after the hit-and-run death of Erin Brenneman, bakery manager at Hungry Heart. Kate started talking to people about lowering the speed limit on Stark in the business district from 30 mph to 20 mph. She got endorsements from Montavilla Neighborhood Association and the Montavilla - East Tabor Business Association, as well as signatures from over 500 people.

Armed with the signatures, letters of support, and evidence of the safety benefits of lower speed limits, Kate submitted the proposal to PBOT at the beginning of May. A mere month later, PBOT installed new 20 mph signs on Stark. Matt Ferris-Smith from PBOT's Active Transportation & Safety Division said in their announcement, "The reduced speed limit support the City of Portland’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2025. Speed is a factor in nearly half of deadly crashes that occur in Portland. Lower driving speeds result in fewer crashes. When crashes occur, lower driving speeds make it more likely that people will survive (see image below)."

Thanks to Kate and all the supporters of this effort. As Kate says, this is "one step in helping make our community a safer, more accessible place for all to live, work and play!"

MNA Votes in May in Support of the Friends of Mt. Tabor Park's Stewardship Fund

We were lucky in May to have a presentation by Diane Redd and Chris Olinger, board members of the Friends of Mt. Tabor Park. They were there to talk about the challenges of maintaining the ecological health of Mt. Tabor Park, and how they were taking a more aggressive step to support their successful Weed Warriors program into the future. After years of support, the City defunded the program in 2017. The program leverages huge numbers of volunteers to keep invasives in check, with over 15,000 hours donated to the effort since just 2010. The MNA board voted to support the effort to replace lost City funding through a new Stewardship Fund, which would provide funding for a part-time volunteer coordinator into the future.

We know many Montavillains visit Mt. Tabor on a regular basis, and we hope you will also consider showing your support for this effort to continue an important program. MONTAVILLA HISTORY

In light of the recent reduction in speed on Stark Street, Montavilla Historian and MNA Board Member Pat Sanders started wondering if this issue had surfaced in the past. Indeed, it had! Back in the August 15, 1907 edition, the Oregonian reported that "the suburbs" in general, and Montavilla in particular, were very concerned about speeding vehicles, and were asking for support from the police in enforcing the limits. The speed limit in 1907? Eight miles per hour.
