We are truly saddened by the sudden demise of Anthony Bourdain, a very creative chef who carved his own niche of showcasing food from a different perspective and at the same time an avid advocate of highlighting the pressing issues of the disadvantaged communities, as he did with the Foundation of Goodness.
We convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones at this difficult time.

 
A group of 32 volunteers from investment banking company Credit Suisse visited the Foundation of Goodness for their community outreach project. The group were very busy during their two day visit, working together as one big team on the first day to paint the FoG Aviva Community Hall and then breaking up in to smaller groups on the second day to conduct a variety of programmes for the FoG beneficiaries such as training session for kids CV writing and interview skills, PowerPoint, MS Office, reading, arts & crafts and English conversation classes.
 
Special visitors to the Foundation of Goodness in May included a visit from Prof. Aaron Williams & Team from the University of Calgary - Canada. 

The Coaches Across Continents Team visited the Foundation of Goodness for a second time and conducted a four day programme on team building at the Sports Academy for our coaches, students and also disabled soldiers.

A special Cultural Fair event was recently organized in The Hague, The Netherlands by the Rotaract Club of The Hague International in support of the Foundation of Goodness, spearheaded by Piyumi Jayasundera, daughter of Ravi and Aloma Jayasundera who have been long time supporters of the Foundation of Goodness and all our humanitarian activities over the years.

37 schools and cricket academies from Southern Sri Lanka received new and used cricket equipment donated by Harry Solomons and Kingsgrove Sports Centre, Australia while netballs donated by them were handed over to school netball teams that needed help obtaining equipment. These donations make a giant impact towards developing rural sports in Sri Lanka and encouraging the next generation of aspiring cricketers and netballers to shine.

32 boxes of books donated by ‘Help a Child, Donate a book’ from Singapore as coordinated by Albert Teo were distributed amongst the 9 FoG Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centres in Udumulla, Rathgama, Matara, Moneragala, Batticaloa, Ampara, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and Jaffna.

The Foundation of Goodness had the pleasure of presenting a pair of spiked shoes to long distance runner Sivanathan Kinthushan from the Vavuniya Tamil Maha Vidyalayam (North) and now we are absolutely delighted to share that he recently placed 3rd at the 5000m long distance event at the South Asian Junior Athletic Championship with a time of 16:18.43.

Our heartfelt congratulations goes out to Sakuni Amaya from the FoG Sports Academy who has been selected as a member of the Sri Lanka U19 National Schools Netball Squad for the tour of Melbourne (Australia) taking place from 30th June to 09th July 2018. Sakuni is the 9th girl from the Academy to gain selection to the National Netball Squad.

 
The FoG Sports Academy Table Tennis players participated in the MORA SMASH All Island Intermediate/ Novices Men’s & Women’s Age Group Table Tennis Championship – 2018 on the 19th and 20th of May 2018 where FoG players Gesandu Helith placed as the Boys U15 Champion and made it in to the U18 Quarter Finals and Open Men's Semi Finals while Vinuki Janithma became the Girls U12 Champion and  U15 Champion.

A special Life Skills workshop was conducted for 33 students from our Women's Enterprise Beauty Care Class with special sessions by FoG Founder/ Chief Trustee Kushil Gunasekera, Financial Consultant Mr. Prithiviraj De Silva and the Community Psycho-social Unit.

We are incredibly moved to have had the students from our electrical Installation & Maintenance Class pool their funds together in order to purchase the materials necessary for their course, to help ease the financial burden from the Foundation of Goodness.

The monthly coaching camp by Sri Lanka's National Women's Coach Hemantha Devapriya sponsored by Tokyo Cement was conducted for 34 cricketers and 8 coaches at the Sports Academy in Seenigama while the 6th North/East Coaching Camp took place in Kilinochchi with 54 students and 4 coaches participating. 

The FoG Sports Academy swimming coaches have introduced video workshops for the Senior and Junior Swimming Squads to help them develop their technique and understand the details necessary for improving their performance in the pool.

The Medical Centre Team conducted their monthly wellness check-ups at the Hikkaduwa and Wellawatta Elders’ Homes to make sure that the residents remain in good health while the Dental Clinic continues its monthly oral care programmes introduced by American teenager Sonali Ranaweera’s Recycling4Smiles initiative. Additionally, a maternity clinic also took place at the Rathgama Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centre to help new and expecting mothers.

Pre-school items donated by the Veterans Cricket Victoria Tour Group during their visit to Seenigama were handed over to St. Sebastian's Pre-school in Mannar (Northern Sri Lanka).
 

Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centres:
The Foundation of Goodness Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centres are designed to empower rural disadvantaged villagers, especially through English and IT which are essential to reduce the levels of poverty. Other programmes also include life skills & values, educational subjects, vocational training and sports to help them make better progress overcoming the disparity between the urban and rural communities.
 
 
  • A total of 98 students (Dress Making Course- 9, Kids Computer- 16, MS Office- 23, English- 15, Basic Sinhala- 15, CCTV Repair- 10, Mobile Phone Repair- 4) from 10 surrounding villages graduated from the Oddusuddan VHE Centre sponsored by SriLankan Airlines. 
  • Little Dehemi Dulhara who studies dance at the Gandara VHE Centre participated in the ‘Derana Little Star’ talent show and made it to the top 10 in the Under 9 category. 
  • Students at the Eravur and Thirukkovil VHE Centres in the East celebrated Tamil Day while the Murukandy VHE Centre (North) organised an English Day programme, aimed at developing the children’s language skills. Meanwhile at the Gandara VHE Centre (South) a special Cultural Day took place to help the students learn more about their traditions and enjoy cultural songs and dances. 
  • Kids at the Oddusuddan and Murukandy VHE Centres in the North took the time to go out doors and set up Home Gardens at the centres, where they planted various vegetables and are now carefully tending to their crop.
  • Our VHE Centre beneficiaries have all been doing their part to benefit the local community and their Centres, the beneficiaries from the Mathagal VHE Centre in Jaffna (North) conducted a beach cleaning  programme while the kids from Oddusuddan (North), Thirukkovil, Sitthandy and Moneragala (East) and Rathgama (South) VHE Centres conducted special clean-up programmes for their Centres and surrounding public areas.
  • The Children’s Good Values Initiative members from the Rathgama, Udumulla and Moneragala Centres were busy during the Vesak period making beautiful lanterns to decorate the Centres in celebrating Vesak, the principal Buddhist holiday which commemorated the birth, Enlightenment and death of the Buddha.
Clothes and beauty care products donated to the Foundation of Goodness by Aloma Jayasundera and her network of supporters across Bahrain were distributed among students at the Murukandy VHE Centre in Kilinochchi.
 
A workshop on Business Planning was conducted for 33 ladies attending the Women’s Enterprise & Empowerment Centre Beauty Culture Course while the Cookery and Bakery Class students visited Shangri- La Hotel in Hambanthota (as pictured above) to gain first-hand experience about the behind-the-scenes operations of an internationally acclaimed hotel chain
 
Community aid outreach programmes conducted by our beneficiaries this month included the Diving & Training Centre students cleaning the premises of the Galduwa Forest Hermitage in addition to their weekly beach cleaning programme. The Sports academy have also completed a number  of outreach projects including helping a family acquire a water connection and helping a needy family complete the electrical wiring of their  home.
 
22 Village Welfare projects (which are in addition to the monthly ongoing sector programmes) amounting to Rs. 564,550/-  (USD 3,550/-) divided among areas such as healthcare, education and general welfare were facilitated this month to uplift the living standards of rural villagers to ease their burden in addition to the ongoing campus style of operation in place. 
 
The Foundation of Goodness is delighted to have 36 volunteers with us this month  from Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, India and Singapore, all of whom are adding value to our work.

FoG's 10th VHE Centre has been earmarked in Bandarawela at a property gifted for this purpose by the caring Wijesooriya family in UK and the sponsorship for 3 years has been pledged by Mr. & Mrs. Mohan and Geetha Chandramohan from LA. Establishing the 11th and 12th Centres are also in discussion with Tokyo Cement.

FoG's 8th Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Plant to be established in Anuradhapura with the kind sponsorship of the Australian High Commission Direct Aid Programme.

Foundation of Goodness will be assisting other organisations supporting Special Needs Children's programmes in the North and South. With leadership from Dr. Naj Nagendran we will be liaising with Serendip Children's Home in building a programme in the North with the Ministry of Education and similarly, in the South we will be working with Methsewa Foundation in Moneragala as well as the CIMA Students Society and Schools Relief Initiative in the UK at a school in Ambalanthota, developing a fully equipped modern classroom.
