Hi Moms and Dads

We hope that you all have a super weekend.

The fhpps staff enjoyed a team building morning here at school on Saturday where we discussed the importance of games, new, old and traditional ones. We had fun making games that we can play with the children and re-visiting the amazing life skills that children learn through playing games. The morning ended with a fabulous craft activity led by Merle MacDonald. Thank you to all for making our Saturday such a fun and productive morning.

We certainly do have a fabulous team, who support and value each other and work together having fun and creating wonderful learning opportunities for your children!!

Thanks so much for the wonderful eats, made and brought in for the Angelfish Cake Sale last Friday. The children loved them!!!!

Thank you too, for the offers to donate towards the twins at Rainbow Educare in Masi. We now have the fees all sponsored for both of them until the end of the year. Your generosity is much appreciated.

Babysitting Evening!!!! –Friday 15 June
Please remember to book for the baby-sitting evening on Friday. Children may arrive from 6pm and need to be fetched by 11pm. We will have fun with your children ( treasure hunt, hot chocolate, popcorn and a movie) and then put them down to sleep, while you have a quiet night in or go out on the town!!!!!
Please don’t forget to bring a torch for our treasure hunt!!!!! As well as a blanket and a pillow and your night time soft toy or teddy. (That you sleep with at night!!)

Dad’s Day and Sausage braai- Friday 22 June
We invite all our dads to join us on Friday 22 June from 8am-12noon. Please take the morning off and come and experience what we do at school with your children each day. You will be invited to participate in morning ring, take part in indoor and our door activities, enjoy the sing song by the children and braai some sausage for us for snack time!!!!!
Please bring in a bit of sausage/borewors that will then be braaied and shared. If you have any allergies or need your own sausage for any reason, please mark the packaging so that it can be cooked separately!!! We will have separate cooking facilities for our Halaal families- please mark it for us and then we will keep it separate.
We look forward to this day and so do your children. If you are not able to come, please organise another adult to come with your child!!!
This is also the last day of the term. The school closes normal time with aftercare until 6pm, but you are welcome to take your child home with you after dad’s day if you want to. Why not do something special with them in the afternoon too!!! And make a day of it!!

CLINIC- Vitamin A drops and De-worming drops
Please ask your teacher or the office for a form if you would like to have the clinic sister administer these drops.
A reminder that it is only for children under 5 years and please bring your child’s clinic card in on the day so that the nurses can fill them in.
I will let you know this week when the nurses will be coming to school.

****We need scrap paper for the children to draw on, please if you have any at home or at your office, please bring it in to school.

Please check lost property every day. The box is outside the Angelfish Classroom.

SECURITY GATE SYSTEM

For your child’s safety, please note that we have a gate security system that involves a fingerprint entrance device. Please use the bell, a button on the left hand side, in the little box at the gate if you have not registered your fingerprint yet. Cards will be issued to those whose fingerprints do not register properly.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU CLOSE BOTH GATES WHEN ENTERING AND LEAVING THE SCHOOL FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN!

Please note that June School Fees are now due.

Please be sure that you have returned your signed fees commitment form to Jane in the office. We keep this on file and it is a commitment to pay your school fees.

OVERARCHING CONCEPT

Our Overarching Concept is COMMUNICATION.
WE NEED TO COMMUNICATE AND LEARN HOW TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY, OPENLY AND HONESTLY, WITHOUT REGRET BUT ALSO WITHOUT HURTFULNESS.
This term we will be looking at how we communicate with each other, you as parents and of course with the children. We will be encouraging and teaching the children to communicate effectively and sharing with them the importance of communication with others. Being honest and respectful in your communication and also communicating in times of conflict to find suitable solutions.

EQ: Solving problems together
General: Insects and Spiders.
Language: H hair, hand, house, hat
Maths:  Direction Left/Right
Grade R reports are ready to be collected. Please organise a time to come in and see me to get your child's report.
Please sign and return the blue forms for our outing to Dominoes Pizza on Wednesday 13 June and  also the yellow form to let us know what school your child will attend in 2019.
It is almost the end of term and that means just 10 working days until Dad's Day - please remember to organise time off work for Dad's Day on Friday 22 June. We celebrate Father's Day on this day at our school and all dads are invited to come to school between 8 and 11 pm. Dad's bring their own boerewors or sausages to braai. It is always a special day and the dads have a good time braaing and meeting new father's in the school. Please try and organise to be at school for at least an hour to spend some time with your child.
The class have enjoyed learning about insects and spiders and have found their  differences and similarities interesting. They were quick to learn the new vocabulary - antena, abdomen, thorax and the word of the week was metamorphosis. I have had a fairly large spider living in my bedroom and managed to catch it. The children were able to see the eyes, hairs on the spider's legs and the 2 body part. They were not afraid and found it very interesting to see all the things we had learned about.  After studying it we released it in the back garden. In our art lesson on Friday I set out waste materials and my only instruction was to make a spider or insect. We recapped the similarities and differences between them and it was lovely to hear the children talking about what they were making eg I need to make a thorax and an abdomen then 8 legs because I am making a spider. I love to challenge the children to think out the box and to create things freely.
As the term has progressed the interest in bringing objects or pictures for our Letterland table has dwindled. Quite a few children are confusing initial sound and rhyming words and I therefore encourage you to help your child bring things for the letter of the week as it helps to reinforce the initial sound.
In maths we will continue to concentrate on direction and left and right. Please try and make your children aware of their left and right side and play games with them or sing songs using the left/right side of the body. Most children are wearing closed shoes with laces but they are still struggling to tie them. Please try help them to learn this important skill as in Grade 1 they will be expected to tie their shoes without assistance. Those that can do it are so proud and eagerly help their friends. It is a skill that makes children feel so grown up and independent so help them to learn to do it.
Skills to practise at home An awareness of Left and Right. Months of the year, days of the week, date of birth. Name writing, tying a shoe lace, identifying numbers and letters in the environment. Listening skills activities like the shopping game. Rhyming games.
Dates to diarise:
Fri 15 June Baby-sitting evening. Leave your children at school from 6-11pm and go out for the evening. Cost R100.
Fri 22 June Dad's Day School Closes.
Have a good week

Number Concepts:  Introduce number 10, Problem solving using numbers 1 to 5, Rote counting, Touch and Count, Number recognition to 10
Thank you to all my Starfish parents who provided vegetables for the soup for Rainbow Educare and to Paula, Melody and Tamara for making the soup.  They have enough soup for this term.  We will begin again in Term 3.  Thank you for your support!!!!
We continue to discuss "Sports and Healthy Eating" along with "Solving a difficult problem".  The class loved their races on Tuesday and I was so proud of them all for participating.  Some of the races were challenging but they persevered.  Teacher Simon has also been giving them lots of encouragement at Fitkids and has even encouraged them to challenge their parents, so if your child has asked or demonstrated a "Side plank", that was their challenge this week.  Teacher Simon has a weekly Blog which can be read on his website www.fitkids-sa.co.za.  I would encourage you to read it!  I would like to encourage you this week to try healthy options in their lunchboxes and water instead of juice.  I was once told by a Dietician that a colourful lunchbox is a healthy lunchbox e.g. slices of cheese, a few nuts, a few tomatoes, slices of cucumber, half a sandwich, yoghurt, fruit, biltong, droewors
Please remember our Pyjama and Educational Games day this Friday 15 June.  Children may come to school in their pyjamas and bring their favourite educational game to teach and play with their friends.  NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES ALLOWED11111
Please remember our "Movie Night and Babysitting" this Friday 15 June from 6 to 11pm.  Please place your child's name on the list outside our classroom.  R100 per child or R150 for 2.
Please remind Dad's to put in leave for Friday 22 June, being Dad's Day at FHPPS.  We will braai sausage and sing and have fun with the dads.
We continue to focus on Language Development.  Encourage your children to tell and make up stories.  Read to them daily and extend their vocabulary by using new words, always explaining to them what they mean.  Continue to play number and counting games to grow their understanding of mathematical concepts.  They are still learning to play "Go Fish" and I introduced them to a new game called "Zingo" this week, which they loved.  Playing Educational games and Board games grows many important skills like concentration, sharing, taking turns, waiting your turn etc.
Dates to Diarise:
15 June - Starfish pyjama and educational games day at school
15 June - Movie and Babysitting night 6 to 11pm

SPARE CLOTHES
Please remember to pack in some spare clothes for your child each day, particularly the younger ones. The children often need to change for various reasons and it becomes a little tricky when there is nothing for them to wear!!!
FACEBOOK
We love sharing pictures from the school day. Teachers only put photos up on our closed Facebook page once a week. Any parent who does not want their child’s photos to appear on Facebook should let their teacher know. www.facebook.com/fhpps.

And on that note...

‘If I had my child to raise all over again, I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later. I’d finger-paint more, and point the finger less. I would do less correcting and more connecting. I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes. I’d take more hikes and fly more kites. I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play. I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars. I’d do more hugging and less tugging’ – Diane Loomans
