SmallsLIVE/Mezzrow Newsletter
June 18th, 2018

Dear Friends:

We just completed a remarkable three nights run at Mezzrow with the amazing Ron Carter.  Pianist Ethan Iverson, a great friend and one with brass-balls, had invited Mr. Carter to play with him at the club last weekend.   This is now the third time around for them and they are becoming part of Mezzrow lore.  What can I say about Ron Carter?  He is an extraordinary presence.  There’s this powerful aura around him that humbles everyone in his presence.  But it isn't because of how he behaves.  Ron Carter is one of the most modest and soft-spoken gentlemen (and I mean – he is a true gentleman) that I have ever been around.  But it is because of the force of his spiritual presence.  His extreme, continuous focus - a powerful mind.  He is always composed and dignified.  There is an unmistakable greatness about him and everyone responds to him in the same way.  He is like a king or president, confident and powerful, benign and compassionate.  From the musical perspective it is just unheralded bass beauty, pouring out so generously.  “You Are My Sunshine”, an anthem turned to a symphony with only a bass.  Six sold out sets and every person to a T in the audience edified and joyful..  Mr. Carter is a rare and extraordinary force that exists right here and now - to be celebrated and grateful.

I wanted also to use my executive powers to plug another jazz club.  I was invited by the owner and an old friend of mine from the Augie’s days to perform at his venerated jazz club - Smoke.  If you haven’t been to Smoke, it's an elegant supper club that has some of the best jazz in New York and an excellent kitchen.  Paul and his staff have worked hard to keep their small club going for years.  I’ll be playing there this Thursday, June 21 in a trio with bass master Buster Williams and my old buddy Joe Farnsworth.  I’d love to have you come out and support Smoke (makes me look good!).   Here’s the link:
