While trail running through the Anacortes Community Forest Land I was struck by the beauty of the beaver pond pictured above. The verticals of the trees and their continuing reflection deep into the lake created architecture for the scattered lilies, reminding me of written music. Trees not only provide structure for the landscape, they have also been the framing for my history, place-keepers where time was spent, hearts were full, or milestones experienced. I am working now on a series of tree portraits in woodblock to honor the witness they have held for meaningful transitions, people, and events in my life. The first completed portrait is below.
Witness, Love; portrait of my parents
Woodblock and mono-print, gold leaf
24" x 24"
This tree is the Live Oak that stood witness to the years my parents lived in their home in Pensacola, Florida. Home to red cardinals, blue jays and mocking birds, creator of shade and keeper of the wind - loved by all.
It was such an honor to be invited to teach a workshop in follow-up to the solo exhibit I had at the Confluence this past summer. Please join me in Twisp to explore inspiration and technique as I lead a workshop informed by my process.
Spring snow, edge of winter
Mixed media on canvas
10" x 20"
Saying goodbye to the snow this year was particularly bitter-sweet as it was my first-ever season of downhill spring-skiing! Committing to down-hill not only brought me an entirely new visual perspective of the mountain landscape, but also the rewards that come from challenging my fears and learning something new. I am already looking forward to next ski-season!
Volunteering for the Frye Art Museum's Creative Aging Program which connects artists with seniors living with dementia has been one of the best volunteer jobs I have ever had. The senior I was assigned to for the past six weeks is a true joy and inspiration. She is a life-long poet and artist. With her family's blessing, I am continuing to visit with her weekly, beyond the end of the program, as her art-making companion. Feeling blessed.
