Justice Gonzalez has been on the Washington Supreme Court since 2012, when he was the first person with a Latino surname ever elected statewide in Washington. He has spent his career striving to provide access to justice for all. Before his time on the Supreme Court, he served his community in varied roles. While practicing business law, he regularly provided pro bono legal assistance for those who could not pay, including in immigration cases referred by the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project. He also served as an Assistant US Attorney, during which he successfully prosecuted the international terrorism case of US v Ressam.
During a decade as a trial court judge on the King County Superior Court, he helped lead his colleagues in writing and implementing a policy to prohibit ICE from taking enforcement actions in the courthouse. While a Superior Court Judge, he chaired the statewide Access to Justice Board. As the current chair of the Supreme Court's Traveling Court Committee, he recently helped take the Court to tribal lands for the first time in our state's history. He often teaches and speaks at schools around the state. Of his position as a Supreme Court Justice, he says, "I love the job, and it is an honor to serve. I enjoy mentoring young lawyers and speaking to students and the public about the importance of civics and service.

Student Success Story - Hugo Mata
|
|
Coming from Royal City, WA a small rural town in Eastern Washington with a population of around 2,000 people it was a difficult transition to the University of Washington. As the first in my family to go to college, and as a first-generation college student being part of an under-represented Latin community at the UW, I struggled to get a grip with getting a jump-start on my career. When I discovered ALPFA during my freshmen year, I can confidently say it was one of the best things that happened to me both academically, personally, and professionally. My opportunities have only continued to expand, and I have grown much more as a professional, in both personal and external factors. I feel much more confident in my professional abilities. Additionally, I’ve developed a vast network with other ALPFA members across the country as well as professionals. Being a member for the past three years, I decided to become the Vice-President of the UW chapter, and I am now in charge of coordinating all meetings, as well as ensuring that members are maximizing their returns from investing in ALPFA. I have watched and helped ALPFA at the UW grow from an essentially non-existent chapter to a thriving representative of the Latinx community.
The most beneficial aspect of ALPFA that has aided me in my professional development from ALPFA has definitely the network of professionals, which proved especially useful at the Las Vegas convention this past summer. At the Las Vegas convention, I was able to meet with professionals from the big-four accounting firms and get several tips on how to prepare for any potential interviews that would potentially arise in the future, which I will elaborate in the next question. Aside from the professional tips, one of the most beneficial aspects of the Las Vegas convention was the opportunity of meeting ALPFA members from across the country. I was able to foster new relationships with other members, and I am still in contact with many of them to this day.
Being a member of ALPFA has absolutely helped me get a job / internship. Last summer at the Las Vegas convention I was able to connect with members of the KPMG Seattle-Office as my roommate, at the time, interned with KPMG. The timing was quite coincidental, as it happened on the day my roommate had forgotten his pad folio in our room and asked me to take it to the KPMG booth at the career fair. When I went down to take it to him, he was not at the KPMG booth, so a KPMG professional, Karina, offered to take it for him. From there on, I struck a conversation with her and we got a long so well that she offered to take my resume back to the Seattle office recruiter. A few days later I received a call from the recruiter to meet downtown for an office tour. She advised me to apply to their Embark Internship, and I did. Within a few days I moved onto the next round and had my interview. Surprisingly, within less than 24 hours following my interview, I received a call from KPMG to let me know that I had been selected as one of their Embark Interns for this summer. There is no doubt that the tips from the professionals I met at convention greatly helped me throughout the application process. This summer, I will be doing an eight-week internship downtown doing a rotation between tax and audit services.
