President's Corner

From Richard Shoaf, President

This month I had the opportunity to attend the Local Section Leadership Summit, a first time event that included 3 people from each region plus the Local Section Council, AIHA Staff and AIHA national board members.

Summary of the meeting:

Arrived in DC and met with some key leaders in AIHA Local Sections, regional LS reps, AIHA board members and the LSC board (all of them).

AIHA staff for Catalyst, LS and the AIHA executive Director was also there.

Keeping it simple:

1). There seems to be a disconnect with LS (local Sections)  and the LSC (Local Section Council reps & Executive board & AIHA National Board)
2). Many LC have problems with recruitment / retention / attracting leadership in key positions.
3). Due to structural differences with different LS and how much governance is provided is limited.
4). There are resources on Catalyst for transition documents (this made me feel pretty good for the drop box file we have and share in the event of a loss of a key person).

Results:

Four task groups where tasked with four areas of operations:

1). Creating on-boarding document files with support docs like:  Job Sheets for positions (editable) Emails to new leaders from LSC & Staff to introduce them and creation of a forum for all board members from different LS on Catalyst - (also asking for a regional one so the LS board members can be on there to share regional issues, events etc). (I am on that task group)

2). Creating a growing community and communication between regional LS (got sucked into that one).  - one thing that is already being fixed is those Local Section Members who are not National Members will be still in the Local Section Leaders Catalyst group - this will help facilitate coms.

3). Creating a list and supporting AIHA ambassadors in a new program.

4). Last one was a laundry list for the LSC & staff to assist in some trouble shooting in other areas of support.

If most of this seemed like a foreign language to you - it did me as well before some of this meeting.

I was an early adopter of Catalyst and interacted on some of it - sort of fizzled out in my honest opinion but see how this can be a value added use for us as leaders in our Local Section and for us professionally.

Will keep you all informed and I am sure Chris Merli and Rachael Phillips will have an update from the Leadership Training in July.

St. Louis Science Fair Report - Donn Cahill

Each year the Academy of Science hosts an the annual St. Louis Science Fair for children and young adults of all grade levels to sharpen up their observation skills and apply the scientific method.  Projects range from physics to biology to environmental based projects. There is always a large selection of projects which tend to apply to the environmental health and safety arena and this year was no exception.
The St. Louis AIHA sponsored 3 individual awards that help to exemplify the creative thinking and support the continued need for safety and health ideas to be fostered in the educational system.  In looking through the large number of projects, we were able to narrow down and award three separate projects.  These projects included:
The Effect of Sun Protection Factors on UVA and UVB Radiation, by Maggie Hannick.  Maggie is a junior at St. Joseph’s Academy.  Maggie’s project studied the SPF’s of various sunscreens in the sun to measure the UVA and UVB intensity of them.
How Distractions Affect Reaction Time, by Mariam Mirza and Emma Whittenburg.  Marian and Emma are sophomores at Parkway West Hight School. Mariam and Emma’s project looked at the negative effects on a person reaction time when exposed to a distraction.
Acoustically Sound, by Amber Retivo.  Amber is an 8th grader at McKinley Classical Leadership Academy.  Amber’s project looked at various materials to determine the material that blocked sound the best.

Guardians in the Storm

The world is alive. Everywhere you look, creation and destruction continue in an endless, turbulent cycle. Caught in the middle of this are people; their homes, workplaces, and refuges of leisure damaged or destroyed, exposing them and their loved ones to hazards of every sort. Now, in the midst of hurricane season, with thousand-year flooding striking with frightening frequency, with wildfires occurring throughout the year, and volcanoes spewing forth their beautiful destruction, it is tempting to sit down, paralyzed by these titanic hazards and believe that someone else will heed the calls of help – but that is not our way. The truth is that we, together with other professionals, are the response. As is often said, industrial hygienists are the guardians of workplace safety – this extends to disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.

To quote AIHA’s document on Industrial Hygienists’ Role and Responsibilities In Emergency Preparedness and Response:

“Industrial Hygienists (IH) have and continue to serve incident commanders, governmental agencies, the private sector, and the community in responding to various disasters, hazardous materials releases, and terrorism events.  IHs bring a wide range of health and safety expertise to support an incident commander (IC), a Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), and various support agencies to ensure prevention of injuries and illnesses among responders and the surrounding area.”

“Industrial Hygienists play a significant role in protecting the lives of our nation’s response personnel, its support staff, and the surrounding community.  Industrial Hygienists’ technical expertise in health, safety and environmental health issues are applicable to a variety of natural disasters, hazardous chemical, biological or radiological releases, and terrorism events.  Industrial Hygienists can effectively identify and control risks during Pre-Planning, Emergency Response, and Consequence Management Phases of an incident.”

It's clear that IH’s have profoundly important roles to play in emergencies, and there’s a decent chance that you or someone you know has been affected by a disaster. As we hope that those affected are recovering well, the closeness of our collective community begs the question “Are you involved in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery?” If so, how? Please use this link to fill out a short survey.

Under the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA), State Emergency Response Commissions and Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs) develop emergency response plans. While environmental, public health, community groups, and others are required members of LEPCs, IH’s are not. This means that unless we specifically seek membership on or other forms of involvement with these groups, governments and the workers and general public they serve may not benefit from the expertise of IH’s – expertise that is perfectly suited to address hazards arising from disasters.

With this in mind, why not take things to the next level? Follow this link to learn more about Federal, State, and local emergency preparedness and response efforts and how you can get involved. Please also feel free to send me an email for additional information and assistance.

Thank you for your dedicated volunteerism!

Sincerely,

Mark Ames
