Process Translated
I directed everyone to turn to the person next to them and form a little group. Some groups had two kids. Some groups had three or four. Then, we played a mix of improv games. Some kids got really into the improv games and some kids could care less. Then I photographed what was happening.

It's common for people to look at my site and think that photos just happen. There's a huge negative reaction to the term "set up" photos. And yet, almost all of my photos are "set up" in some way. We asked this group to be in this location at a specific time and then gave them very clear direction about what to do. We moved them around to create a kind of perfect imbalance and used lighting to help the entire group pop out a bit from the background. I'm really good at creating spontaneous set up photos that look like they just happened. I love it.

This was the last day of shooting what was eight different images library projects over about six weeks throughout April and May. It's hard for me to keep them all straight. As I edit through the work I like to put favorite images from the projects into a "favorites" folder and then start to see all the projects as one larger body of work. See a few more favorites here on my blog. I also updated my website with lots of new work. Have a look here.
