June 2018

This month... We reveal the winners of the eBook short story competition, update you on activities at our new Makerspace, tell you about our special rhyme times and give a taste of what's happening during the long summer months.

We highlight our eAudio collection and some of the activities going on across our 43 branches this June.

eBook Short Story Competition
Congratulations to Phoebe Haywood  and Louise Brakspear for their winning entries to this year's competition. You can read both stories via the Oxfordshire Library eBook webpage or the Overdrive and Libby apps

Thank you
The first week of June is Volunteers' Week. We would like to say a  huge thank you to our fantastic volunteers for supporting us in so many different ways across Oxfordshire.  For more information on volunteering or to apply please click here.
National Bookstart Week

National Bookstart Week is BookTrust's annual celebration of the joys and benefits of sharing books, stories and rhymes from as early an age as possible. This year, National Bookstart Week will take place from 4th-10th June and the theme is Bookstart Bird Boogie.

This year's chosen mini-book which will be handed out free to pre-schoolers at special rhyme times across Oxfordshire, is A Busy Day for Birds by Lucy Cousins.. It's a brilliant book to read aloud - full of actions to do and noises to make - and it's guaranteed to get the 0-5s boogieing!

Will Wyatt Author Event

Join us for an evening with Will Wyatt on 12th July from 6pm - 7pm at Oxfordshire County Library, as he talks about 'Oxford Boy: A Post-War Townie Childhood', his memoir of growing up in Oxford in the 1940s and 50s: not academic Oxford, but the Oxford of Cowley workers and ex-servicemen.

Will is an experienced speaker and presenter. He has worked for the BBC as a producer, head of documentaries and managing director of television. He has been on the boards of a bookmaker, a manufacturing company and a media consultancy, and was chairman of the University of the Arts London and the Teaching Awards.

Makerspace Oxford
The Makerspace Oxford is an exciting new space at Oxfordshire County Library. It is a place to explore new technology, learn new skills, encourage STEM and STEAM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths), and get involved in a range of activities.
Activities currently running in the Makerspace include Introductions to 3D printing and Computer Aided Design, Code Club, Raspberry Jams, tablet help sessions, coding meetups, creative writing clubs, craft workshops, and language exchanges. We'll be expanding the activities on offer over time. Please do let us know what you'd like to see in the Makerspace or if you would like to work with us to deliver events.

This summer we have reading and digital challenges for all ages!

For children we have our annual Summer Reading Challenge;  this year it's called 'Mischief Makers' and features well-known cartoon characters Dennis, Gnasher and friends.  Look out for all sorts of exciting activities and events.

Adults won't miss out as we have another season of 'Oxfordshire Reads', our sizzling summer celebration of books and reading!  We’ll be asking readers to tell us about their favourite books: historical humdingers and waggishly witty tales to whet our appetites!
For the first time this summer, and following on from the great success of  initiatives such as Code Clubs and Raspberry Jam sessions, children will be able to collect special badges for completing our digital challenges!

More details soon...
What's On this month?
From Rhymetimes to computer classes, we have events in our libraries for everyone! Here is a small taster of what's going on:
Olive Gibbs
Oxfordshire County is hosting a Carers Week Roadshow. Are you an unpaid carer? Why not pop in to Oxford to see how Carers Oxfordshire can support you? In Cowley there is currently an exhibition to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Olive Gibbs, a well-loved local politician. There's a poetry and art workshop in Oxford with Chris Tutton, a talk in Goring by Janet Hurst on the unsung heroes of the Great War and Autism Family Support coffee mornings at Carterton.
