How to Clean Your Bike
How to Clean Your Bike:
In order to effectively clean your bike and keep it in great shape you will need the following: Clean rags, a sponge, a bucket, scrub brush, a soft square brush for wheel cleaning, degreaser, garden hose with spray head and Dawn dish washing detergent.
- Ideally you would have a bike work stand to get your bike off the ground and keep it in ideal position. You can also string a clothes line up and place your saddle on that.
- Fill two clean buckets with water and a good amount of dish soap.
- Remove your computer head.
- Remove wheels and set aside.
- Apply degreaser to the chain (approximately ½ ounce). Turn the crank backwards and let this sit for 5-10 minutes. IF you are using citrus degreaser only allow contact for two minutes. We recommend not using citrus degreaser. After the wait rinse with the hose on a low setting, spraying straight down on the chain. If there is still grime in the chain you can apply soap directly to links and crank backwards through a handheld sponge or rag to get clean. Buying a Park Chain Cleaner will streamline this process and make it much easier!
- Take a stiff bristled brush and dip into your clean bucket and then apply a little degreaser directly to the brush. Scrub the chain rings thoroughly and then rinse with water. Repeat this process on the cassette. If needed get a stiff bristled toothbrush to get into the hard to reach areas.
- Using your second fresh bucket of soap, dip a soft brush in and soap up your frame. It is important to work from front to back and be diligent. Get that thing clean!
- Grab the softer square brush and dip into the frame bucket and scrub all around both wheels including the spokes and hub. Don’t forget to get both sides of the wheel.
- Rinse both frame and wheels, being careful not to linger spraying where bearings are located.
- Reattach the wheels and spin the crank to make sure everything is spinning freely.
- Wipe down all moving parts with a dry softer cloth. For the frame grab a fresh rag and wipe thoroughly and then let the bike dry in the sun preferably.
- Reapply your favorite chain lube and then put a frame protector on all areas of the frame to help keep it clean and looking great.

This may not last as the weather keeps turning but is a clear indicator that now is the time to get your bike in to BNS Bike Service. This is incredible as other shops in Southern Maine are upwards of two weeks before your bike comes back! We know how much being on your bike means to you and we will do whatever it takes to get your bike back to you as soon as possible. BNS Bike Service also offers a rush service plan should you forget to bring your bike in and wait times have built up. We will do a rush on your bike for an additional fee to get you on the road quickly. We hope to keep our service turnarounds in the 2-3 day max range, but this offers folks an option if they hit us during a really busy time.
