Visual Communicators Newsletter
JUNE 2018

This is a monthly newsletter from the UN Designers and Visual Communicators Group in Geneva. Drop us a line if you would like to collaborate or share any material in this newsletter: info@UNdesigners.org

New Meetup on Branding

The UN Designers’ next meetup will be on 22 June 2018 from 9:30am in Room VIII, Palais des Nations. (For those who are available, we would also like to invite you stay and socialize over lunch afterwards).
During our 12th Meeting, we will revisit Branding & Visual identities in the UN Family, this time with the help of Carlo Mendes. Carlo has been leading a visual identity exercise at IOM, and will be able to share his insights regarding the challenges of branding de-centralized organizations with strong regional presences, and how to ensure your brand stays relevant across all channels. This will be a great opportunity to discuss branding matters in multi-stakeholder organizations and gauge how design matters develop as compared to the private sector.
Entry is free, and if you would like to attend, please add your name/organization to this list before 20 June. Hope to see you all there!

Roaring SDGs

Each June, from 18-22, the global advertising and communications industry gather at the French Riviera to learn, network and celebrate: but for the very first time in its long history, Cannes Lions is going to recognize the positive impact that commercial messages can have on the environment and society with an special award for sustainability – the SDG Lion! This is the latest addition to the festival’s awards categories line-up and comes two years after the festival introduced the Glass Lion to recognise that the industry needed to tackle gender stereotypes.
Besides the awards, there is also a fully-packed five days conference. The “Good” track packs most of the talks reflecting SDGs issues, such as the one given by the Executive Director of UN World Food Programme (WFP), or How to use Technology for Good from UNHCR... The perfect excuse to visit Cannes this June!

Recognition for Data Journalism

We love to see that good work receives well deserved recognition, and that’s where the Data Journalism Awards come into the story. These awards are given to data-driven articles, investigations, applications and storytelling projects. And to our surprise, this year's major award was featured in our February newsletter (we were spot on!). Their official web page is somehow rudimentary, but allows you to discover all entries, shortlisted candidates and of course the winners. A true feast for data visualization enthusiasts.

June Inspiration
A (cool) initiative
A place to create good forces and even run a merchandise online store! New DivisionTrollbäck's strategy and communication hub dedicated exclusively to the SDGs.
A book
If not yet, you’ll surely become a philatelist after reading Graphic Stamps, a book showcasing the miniature beauty of graphic postage stamps, including some UN examples.
A trend
One we hope other agencies follow: Human centered design at the heart of Unicef and UNHCR Innovation hubs. The latter is launching this month new Innovation awards for NGOs.
A flow chart
This World Refugee Day (20 June) we stand with refugees. To help us grasp the real scale of the problem Lucify has designed The flow towards Europe with data gathered from UNHCR.
A poster
The fight against plastic continues! Marine Conservation Society campaign for World Oceans Day (June 8) really makes you think twice before using another plastic straw.
An adventure
