In May, the Zero Waste Team at Chou Hall said "goodbye and good luck" to its original Student Lead, Ryan Peterson. Additionally, most of the team is away for the summer, with internships or classes, but a few remain, managing the process of implementing policies and procedures as well as gathering evidence and narratives for the TRUE Zero Waste certification.
Welcome summer session students! The Chou Hall Zero Waste Team tabled the first week of summer session, informing new visitors and reminding recurring visitors that the building does not generate landfill and does not have landfill bins, therefore asking visitors to take the "pack in, pack out" approach with any landfill-based items (e.g. plastic snack bags and candy wrappers). Congratulations to the three winners of the raffle during tabling! We gave out a $50 gift card to Cafe Think and two reusable water bottles.
Quick reminder: Although the City of Berkeley accepts plastics #1-7 as recycling, the UC Berkeley campus only accepts plastics #1 & 2 as recycling. Therefore plastics #3-7 are considered landfill on the UC Berkeley campus (e.g. yogurt cups, non-compostable clamshell containers, and boba tea cups). What do the numbers actually mean? Check out PBS's guide to plastics numbering to learn more.
