It was a bumper attendance at the June meeting to hear the Nottinghamshire Police & Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping, update us on policing across the district and in Newark, in particular.

Since 2010, police budgets have been reduced by 25% and there are 25,000 less police officers nationally. This is the lowest number for 30 years and people are worried about the level of policing at a local level. Across Nottinghamshire there are currently 200 PCSOs and 1920 police officers. This number will increase by 130 to 2050 over the next two years.
Talking specifically about Newark, Mr. Tipping confirmed that the police station was not closing, and, in fact, Newark was going to become a better equipped facility, with CID moving back to the town and a planned higher police presence on the streets within the town.
The custody cells have closed in Newark but as the majority of the crime is in the north of the county, the decision was made to focus custody suites in the Mansfield area, hence freeing up £250,000 to cover other policing services such as a cadet scheme and an education programme for schools and colleges. Interestingly, people under 21 commit the most crimes but they also represent the biggest number of victims.
The Commissioner talked about the level of crime and that numbers have increased, partly due to more people reporting incidents. The type of crimes has also changed, with terrorism, knife and online crime taking more resources, nationally, than ever before. (Nottinghamshire is the only county with a dedicated knife crime unit.) As a country and a county we have to decide where best to focus these resources.
He ended the meeting by reiterating that Newark is a safe and prosperous place to live and work but that it is all our responsibilities to deal with crime by passing information on and reporting crime when it happens.

ACTION GROUP UPDATE
The Business Club Action Group meets once a month to consider items that may help or hinder Newark’s economic vibrancy and to respond accordingly on behalf of the town’s business community.
Led by James Fountain, this includes planning applications, road and rail transport and issues such as the current sewer works. NEWARK MIND TO CLOSE
As of 29 June 2018, the mental health charity, Newark Mind, is to close to service users.
Due to funding constraints, the charity is taking this opportunity to restructure, but until sufficient funds have been secured, the Newark Mind centre on London Road will be closed and client services will cease.
Newark Mind would like to thank all the local businesses that have supported it.
