Bringing the Bronx Salad to the Jerome Gun Hill BID
The Jerome Gun Hill BID is working to make the Bronx #not62. During Bronx Week we hosted a workshop for chefs and restaurant owners in the BID to learn how to make and market the Bronx Salad in their businesses. Led by two of the creators of the salad, Chef King Phojanakong and Henry Obispo, the BID conducted a training with the support of Bronx Health Reach and the Department of Small Businesses Avenue NYC program.
The salad was created in 2013 in response to the borough ranking last out of all 62 counties in New York State for health outcomes. A riff on Bronx flavors and culture, the salad is healthy and delicious, featuring corn, black beans, mango, peppers, avocado, plantain chips, and a zesty dressing made from the Bronx Hot Sauce. Merchants in the BID are excited about bringing the salad to their customers and currently one bodega owner has successfully launched the Bronx Salad at their business. Head to Tasty Picks at 89 E Gun Hill Road to try the Bronx Salad if you haven't already!
