Dear RGHS Parents and girls

The school has been very quiet over the past two weeks as the girls have got down to preparing for and writing their examinations.   

Ms Schnetler, Ms Blackshaw and I had the privilege of attending the SAGSA (South African Girls’ Schools Association) conference in Durban a week ago.  It was refreshing to hear inspiring talks from some amazing speakers.  The talk that was particularly inspiring was that of Penny Haynes, who spoke about how it’s not always fun as you pursue your dream and sometime it means hard work, failure, learning, failure, more hard work, failure and the necessity of having clear goals. 

It has been rather incidental that I have received links to the following two videos which together tell the story that it is important that we teach our girls the importance of taking calculated risks both academically and in reaching their goals.  It is our responsibility as the adults in their lives to help create the safe space in which they can grow as they take opportunities for learning and growth.  These wonderful young ladies are our leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, artists and industrialists of the future.

As we come to the end of this term and teachers complete the marking of papers and compilation of marks and reports, please take the time to praise your daughter on her achievements this term.  She needs you as her cheerleader as she takes the risks that will help her grow into the confident and independent young woman you wish her to be.

General Notices

  • As indicated on the calendar published online, we have been granted permission to close for a Wellness day on Friday 15 June. We hope your daughter will enjoy a day of rest following the mid-year exams at Rustenburg.
  • On Wednesday 13 June, we will be taking Form Class photos for Grade 8-11. Girls are reminded to come to school in full winter uniform (no sports kit).

Sports News and Results 7 June 2018

AFTER EXAMS SPORT: Sport will continue from Monday 11 June to Thursday 14 June, as per the normal Term 2 Sports Programme. 

Dates to diarise: 

  • Thursday 14 June: Netball matches vs Springfield @ home (all teams) 
  • Friday 15 June: No school, however there are 2 x Hockey matches. 
  • U16C Hockey match vs Wynberg @ home – 15h30 
  • U19C Hockey match vs Wynberg @ home – 16h30 
  • Monday 18 June: Inter-House Netball and Hockey – 13h30-15h30 
  • Thursday 21 June: Inter-House Cross Country – 12h00-13h15 (all girls)

Congratulations to...
Ashleigh Smith in C3 has been invited to represent South Africa at the Kimura Shukokai International Karate World Championships 2018 in Stockholm, Sweden from 15 to 28 July 2018.  Rustenburg wishes her success at the Champs.  We look forward seeing some pictures on Ashleigh’s return to school.

Music
Congratulations to our fabulous Jazz Band and Mr. Buitendag on their well executed and entertaining performance at the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival on Wednesday 30 May 2018.
Two of our piano students, Kim-Joy Damon (Gr 12) and Catherine Lee (Gr 8), took part in the Four Maestros Piano Workshop weekend held from 17-19 May at Curro Durbanville. The weekend consisted of lectures, as well as public and individual masterclasses presented by piano masters, Jose Dias, Francois du Toit, Albie van Schalkwyk, and Mario Nell. Every student had the opportunity to work with all four maestros over the weekend and it was indeed an very inspiring programme. Both Kim-Joy and Catherine were also invited to perform at the concert on the Saturday evening. 

LO Matters

Greenpeace Africa #Defend Water Campaign


Greenpeace would like to invite our girls to showcase their creative talents by engaging with the #DefendWater initiative. In so doing they can win a fabulous Greenpeace Africa hamper.

We know that learners’ creativity knows no bounds and we therefore invited your school’s learners to use their talent to complete the last frame of our cartoon strip. The story’s ending is up to them. All they have to do is:
  • Like Greenpeace Africa on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
  • Complete the last frame of the cartoon with a short story or a poem, a drawing or a poster, a giff, a short video clip or even a sculpture.
  • Post it on their social media pages using #DefendWater.
 
Greenpeace Africa will select three winners from the entries submitted and our school will receive a 500L RAIN HARVESTING FLEXITANK should one of our learners be chosen as a winner.
