Stories from Island Shores
The wreck of the Poinsett, August 1870.
On August 30, 1870, the brig, Poinsett, on its way from Havana to Boston, ran ashore on the south side of the island, near Nobadeer Pond. About forty casks of sugar were saved, but the vessel broke apart and became a total loss. Afterward, fragments of the ship could be seen strewn along the beach for miles.

Join Egan Maritime for a program curated for young families and museum visitors, filled with crafts, stories, and activities. In addition to guided tours and on-demand films in the Gund Program Gallery, families are invited to enjoy a scavenger hunt throughout the museum, create items inspired by Nantucket's nautical history, and learn about some of the island's famous shipwrecks in this years special exhibition, Courage & Calamity, Fifty Ships Against the Sea.
Family Day is free and open to all thanks to the generous support of Ritchie, Katie and Westray Battle. This is the second year the Battle Family has underwritten museum programming in hopes that all island children will experience and learn about Nantucket's heroic lifesaving history.
