Join the cause - sponsor Sarge's Dog Walk
T-shirt deadline is July 1
Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation’s 13th Annual Downtown Dog Walk will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, along Main Street in Waynesville. Sponsorships are due now because July 1 is deadline to have names on the commemorative T-shirt.
“A big turn-out is expected,” said Felisha Yon, Sarge’s board member and Dog Walk co-chairman. “In 2017, hundreds of dogs and their owners enjoyed the beautiful day at Sarge’s Dog Walk in Waynesville.”
Donations raised through Sarge’s Annual Downtown Dog Walk help supply food, medical care, and shelter for animals at Sarge’s Adoption Center and in foster homes.
“Sponsors, both businesses and individuals, benefit from this community event,” Felisha said. “Individuals can sponsor in their name, in honor of a pet or person — or even in memory of a beloved pet.”
Sponsor names are printed on the back of the T-shirts and the shirts become collector’s items. More than 400 shirts were distributed last year.
Sponsors will be mentioned in pre-event publicity on Sarge’s website and Facebook page and listed in a post-event ‘thank you’ ad in the newspaper. Vendor space is provided for sponsors $500 and above at the Haywood County Court House, where the walk begins and ends.
“Sponsorships are crucial to the success of the Dog Walk,” Felisha said. “Please help us continue this important mission in our community.”

“Sarge’s Dog Walk is always a special event,” Felisha said. “Come join the fun.”

Pet Support Day helps the community
Sarge’s, Haywood Spay/Neuter, the Animal Hospital of Waynesville and The Dog House worked together to offer community assistance for pets and their humans in a Community Pet Support Day May 20, in front of The Dog House, in Waynesville.
The event was designed to help lower income families get services important to good quality of life for their pets — and it was very well-attended.
“The pet support gave away 50 bags of dog food, 30 bags of cat food, 30 tubs of cat litter, 25 dog toys, 20 cans of wet cat food, 20 cans of dog food, 30 collars and leashes and 165 flea medications,” said Felisha Yon. “People were lined up by 11 a.m. and there was a steady line until 2:30 p.m.”
The Community Pet Day was funded by a grant from the May K. Houck Foundation and sponsored by The Dog House. The event included the pet supplies giveaways and low cost Rabies and microchip clinics.
“We are grateful for the support of the May K. Houck Foundation, which made this event possible,” Felisha said.
2nd Karaoke Night for the Animals a rousing success
Sarge’s WuzBug Fund was the beneficiary of the second rollicking Karaoke Night for the Animals June 9 at Boojum Brewing Company in Waynesville.
WuzBug’s Fund helps special needs animals — by providing care to prepare these animals for a forever home.
“It was also a ‘fun-raiser’ because Boojum’s The Gem Bar venue was electric, with party atmosphere and people clearly having a blast,” said Nancy Bulluck, Sarge’s founder, medical assistant and social media manager. “The D.J., Razor, is the best — he knows exactly how to get a party started and keep it going.”
Sarge’s is grateful to Boojum Brewing Company for providing the venue and party food, and to DJ Razor for spinning the tunes and offering karaoke opportunities.

Sarge's Infirmary News
Sarge’s has four animals in the infirmary right now. First is a little Chihuahua mix, Thomas, who is heartworm-positive. He is in pre-treatment now, and around July 8, he'll have the treatment to kill the adult heartworms.
“We'd love to find a foster home to keep him low-key, with crate rest and leash walking for several weeks after that treatment,” said Nancy Bulluck.
Second is Fox Hound Sissy, who gave birth to a big litter of puppies recently. Sarge’s and Sissy have a lot of puppies to care for!
The third is kitten Dorian Gray, who was brought into the animal emergency center at Junaluska Animal Hospital. Hospital staff member Anna Cole said he was brought in by a girl who found him in the road, and assumed he’d been hit by a car,” Anna said. “His leg was broken in three places and he was scraped up.”
Dorian is recovering in Sarge’s care now.
And the fourth animal is a mixed breed dog, Rebel, who was the victim of severe neglect. A good Samaritan took him when the owner indicated he no longer wanted the dog, but was unable to keep him himself due to rental restrictions.
“So he brought him to Sarge’s, and we're going to make sure he gets all the care he needs to become the healthy and happy dog he deserves to be,” Nancy said.
If readers would like to help with the expenses of caring for these sweet animals, donating to the WuzBug Fund for Special Needs is the way to do it. Visit: https://www.sargeanimals.org/donate/donate-to-animals-with-special-needs/.
Specify the pet’s name on the donation, or donate to the fund in general, so that funds will be there for the next dog or cat needing extraordinary medical care.
